Beach bonfire & potluck

Note: Due to funky weather date has been changed (again). This is a really nice beach for a bonfire. I'll bring a boom-box and frisbee. Bring some beach-friendly food to share, maybe we have some guitar players out there? Alcohol is not "legal" here, but this beach is not patrolled, bring a plastic cup if you choose to imbibe.  I'll bring some wood as will Matt. Rain cancels. The map link above will get you close, Find East Cliff Drive, beach is between 26th and 30th Avenue.  There is parking and restroom facilities there, we will be on the beach by the big rocks on the right.

Little notes: Ingrid - pleasure to meet you, Chad - your medicine doesn't work on Russians, sorry ;) Handsome guy - still up to be your manager for Guess jeans commercial ;) Call! Girl in a cute hat - thank you for being brave (young ;) enough to dance!
On a serious note: left behind a wine opener (metal fish shape). My neighbor would appreciate if someone finds it, otherwise I'd have to knock on his door everytime I need to open the bottle :(
Love you all ! let's do again..

Weather update 5:15 Sunny, breezy, but looks like it should be fun. Red or blue solo cups are preferred( non see though but that is all I have) since libations are not endorsed at the beach by the sheriff. :) See you there with some wood as well.

    April 14, 2012

  • Jeff H.

All good, i got a box of wood and a bottle of wine, could use some kindling, heading over around 6 to build a fire on the sand, should burn fine. Bringing some finger food and a fire frisbee for later. Look for the green folding chair.

    April 14, 2012

  • Gregg

Fatwood is a good idea. I will bring some wood as well. Never hear of the exploding duraflames. Is there some product liability concerns we should know of on them? And as an FYI fatwood is the part of the pine tree at the base that is full of pine pitch, when when dry, is sort of crystalline, and seems to burn like fat, hence the name. ( used to own a woodstove store with my brother- he still owns it here in town)

    April 14, 2012

  • Cheryl

I'll bring some Fat Wood, (kindling soaked in sap), and charcoal lighter fluid. Dura flames can explode so maybe not a good idea.

    April 14, 2012

  • Carolyn

FYI Sunset is 7:41 if ya wanna catch it!

    April 14, 2012

  • Gregg

I like that enthusiasm! Now the flame thrower, that's a nice touch, not every girl packs one of those. Yeah, we will have to see how it is as you may be right, Twin Lakes might be the go to alternative.

    April 14, 2012

  • Sally

Cool, thanks, Gregg! Good thinking, I will grab some kindling and firelighters, newspaper, boy scouts, flame thrower, maybe a couple of bricks, something will work, just so long as we have enough heat and cheer once it gets going, and don't get thrown off the beach for an uncontained bonfire! It never seems to be a problem over by Twin Lakes. See you over there later!

    April 14, 2012

  • Gregg

Hi Sally, we might be able to. Problem is we have had heavy rainstorms recently and the beach is pretty wet and small. Doing it on the sand may work with plenty of kindling as the sand will be real wet . It will probably be fine by the road as the tide doesn't usually wash up that far.

    April 14, 2012

  • Sally

Hi Gregg - I think we were planning to just build a fire right on the sand. Since you are our "man on the spot" so to speak - is this going to work? It is pretty much what I have done before. Is this allowed on this beach? Jeffrey, the organizer of this event is diving, so not around to comment until the event - so please let me know!!

As this is the beach, any time of year layers are necessary. It is only sort of truly warm ( for the beach) in the latter part of summer later in the day and evening. During summer we always have jackets. As of now ( 1:30 ) it is still high clouds and some wind on the water. I suspect someone may need to bring one of those portable fire pits. They haven't put out any yet I am pretty sure. I would look forward to those in bikini's, you will be brave. LOL

    April 14, 2012

  • Brenda G.

Looking forward to a great evening on the beach tonight!

    April 14, 2012

  • Sally

Thank you Gregg and J. - so, it is a gorgeous day, let's make the most of it, Lynn, and just leave the bikinis at home, bring layers of warm clothing, blankets and wood, folding chairs and all that good stuff and music so we have a reason to jump around to keep the circulation moving! See everyone later!

    Live 2 blks from the beach..weather resport>>
GORGEOUS DAY ON THE BAY* SUNNY VERY little wind*YES** bring it on*

    April 14, 2012

  • Gregg

It is actually quite pretty today and sunny.I live here and am looking at the water now towards that direction. Don't know who would think it would be warm in April at the beach, but it should be nice. It is supposed to be around 60 and that is about what it feels.

    April 14, 2012

  • Jeff H.

OK fire on, i'll try to be there by 6. Bring a plastic glass, chair, wood, marshmallows and maybe a little finger/beach food to share. Liquor should be kept out of sight but it is a mellow low-enforcement beach.

    April 12, 2012

  • Chris

I have a truck if we need it to carry wood and I can definitely bring a bundle or two.

    April 12, 2012

  • Sally

Hi Jeffrey, I can bring about 3 or 4 bundles of wood and folks coming - if you can bring at least one bundle per 3-5 people, especially those with larger vehicles, can we ask for a few dollars from those who cannot bring wood to just chip in? Just so we don't have to move the date yet again!! Hope everyone else is still on board - and if we just have a short evening due to running out of wood - we can call it a rehearsal for the next one! What do you think? Still on or not?

    April 11, 2012

  • Jeff H.

Hi all, i'm a little concerned about this event due to the large number of people signed up, we would need a LOT of wood to make a bonfire big enough for a large crowd, like pallets worth and i do not have access to those or a truck to move them over to the beach. Also i accidentally double booked for the 14th with SCUBA diving in Monterrey, I'll be back but won't have much time to set up. So for now until we can arrange serious wood i propose postponing the event until we get organized.

Confirming... the upDATE is April 14th. Correct?

    March 30, 2012

  • Stella

    I will bring fire wood.

  • Brenda G.

I say Party at Matts house again. :-) Since I planned on being down in Santa Cruz on Saturday, is there anything else going on?

    March 29, 2012

  • Matt P.

Sigh, Mother Nature must not like bonfires. I agree with Jeffrey that we should postpone the bonfire again due to the weather forecast. I won't be around on 4/14 but don't let that stop this bonfire from happening on 4/14. I leave that decision up to you Jeffrey but you will need to organize it if you are ok with that. I'll contact ya separately on your other question, thanks.

    March 29, 2012

  • Sally

Hi - I can offer to bring some fire wood - good call on changing the date, sounds like a better bet for a fine evening. Looking forward to a fun evening! Thanks!

    March 29, 2012

  • Jeff H.

P.S. Matt will you still be around 4/14? Is anyone going to take over the group?

    March 29, 2012

  • Jeff H.

Best forecast i can find says raindrops, plus it's been a cold front which is not a lot of fun, i propose we reschedule, i'm thinking April 14. Note with this many people coming if even half show up we'll need some serious wood so let's see a show of hands, who can bring wood?

    March 29, 2012

  • Brenda G.

Or we could play in the rain. :-)

    March 27, 2012

  • Matt P.

Hang tight for now all and keep your fingers crossed. The forecast can change a lot between now and Saturday.

Janie, true, I was thinking further down by the parking lot at the end, that is where I usually go - actually there is also down the beach a bit below Seascape Resort - in that area I think you can still let your dogs run free. I'm game eitherway.

brenda, not sure you've seen rio del mar during the rains. aptos creek has logs floating to this beach from above & the mini lake from opening up the dam, prevents you from walking to the ocean directly. the pits are put out in summer, but now you will have to drag them--very large and cement. they are also now ticketing hefty fees if they catch your dog loose. pretty to watch in this weather, not sure if comfortable until we clean up the debris and the sands dry out a bit. but hey, i'm game.

    March 14, 2012

  • Natasha N.

Agree with Matt, let's wait and see..3 days can change everything. Crossing fingers!!

    March 14, 2012

  • Brenda G.

If it does not rain and weather permits, we could always change it to a different beach like Rio Del Mar in Aptos area. They have fire pits and allow dogs.

    March 14, 2012

  • Matt P.

Ok, this Winter officially sucks. I have been waiting for rain/snow all Winter to I can actually use my Kirkwood season pass and now it decides to rain! Argh! Hang tight for another day guys on this. Many times the forecast changes the day before when it comes to skiing so I am hoping (with fingers crossed) that the forecast will change by tomorrow. Let's see what the forecast calls for tomorrow before we postpone this. More to come.

i agree. the creek in my backyard is rising fast! supposedly worse in the mountains. lots of debris on the beach here from the creek. not sure about moran lake though.

    March 14, 2012

  • Jeff H.

Hi All, so the weather is not looking good for Saturday, let's postpone.

    March 14, 2012

  • Matt P.

Rivy, not sure yet on the firewood. I will get back to you on that.

    Janie, thanks for the info!

To all, the forecast is calling for rain this weekend unfortunately. I have my fingers crossed it will change to sunny before the weekend hits. If it doesn't, I may just move this event to my house in Felton!

i will probably bring my dog as well. i found this link which seems to indicate it is okay. i do know they are patrolling beaches for dogs on leashes lately. http://www.doggoes.com/parks/california/santa-cruz-county/moran-lake-park-and-beach

    shall I bring some firewood????

    March 8, 2012

  • Matt P.

Hi Alison! Good question. I have never been to this beach but Jeffrey should be able to answer your question as he has done this before at Moran Lake Park & Beach. I have no issue with you bringing your dog. We are a very dog friendly group!
