The first stereolighography machines sold for around $200K and today small modern 3D printers sell for around $10K ready to use or $1K for kits. I've seen a laser sinter metal 3D printer able to make heads for reciprocating engines and V-8 engine blocks. Or titanium blades and compressors for jet engines.
Automated tape laying (ATL) and automated filament placement (AFP) machines permit making structural assemblies and parts used in making the Boeing 787 and Beech Premier business jets. Can engineering students design larger ATL & AFP machines able to make ship sections 120 feet wide by 100 feet long by[masked] feet tall? If so this may revolutionize shipbuilding. The Boeing 787 is made of 11 sections ranging from 20 feet long to 40 feet long that are fastened together with titanium fasteners to be replaceable if damaged.
