Spiritual Poetry Meetup

  • Sep 21, 2013 · 4:00 PM
  • Spiritual Poetry Meetup

Looking forward to getting together again the third Saturday in September!  This time we will be meeting in Santa Monica, on 11th Street.  We'll share spiritual poetry, enjoy light refreshments, and talk about what the poems mean to us.  Last time we read poems by Neruda, Roethke, Davies, Hirschfield, and Whyte -- I'm looking forward to what people decide to read next time!  This is a relaxed and welcoming space to meet and get to know others who share a love for poetry and for that which connects us more deeply with spiritual life.  Our sharing allows us to get to know each other on a level beyond the surface, and it is wonderful to truly 'meet' each other in this way.  Bring a book of poems or choose a poem from the many books we have on hand – you can read a poem, share copies of a poem, or just listen and chat – whatever feels comfortable.   Feel free to bring a small snack or finger food if you wish.  (P.S. For the poets among us, we are grateful to you for bringing your insights and heart-knowledge to our group, and for understanding that this is a place to share others' poems, not our own.)

(For titles of some of the poems we've shared in the past, see the comments for previous meetups.)

Date & Time: Saturday, September 21st, 4:00pm

849 11th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90403

(Between Idaho Avenue and Montana Avenue, on the east side of the street near the corner of Idaho & 11th)

What a fun get together! Here is a list of poems (or, if no title, first lines) from the September meetup - a lot of Rumi this time!

Rumi: "One Swaying Being" (version by Coleman Barks)
St. John of the Cross: "The Dark Night of the Soul"
Mirabai: "Why Mira Can't Come Back to Her Old House" (version by Robert Bly and Jane Hirshfield)
Rumi: "The Quest" (translated by Kabir Helminski)
Mary Oliver: "Making the House Ready for the Lord"
Rumi: verse 1047, first line "When it's cold and raining, you are more beautiful" (version by Coleman Barks)
Rilke: "The Enlightened Heart" (translated by Stephen Mitchell)
Rumi: Two short poems "I was happy enough to stay still" and "Spring overall. But inside there's another unity" (versions by Coleman Barks)
