Berry Berry quite contrary for saturday.

Meet at 9:15 and head over to Angwin and round the lake counterclockwise and then over the hill to middletown. from there we head to Calistoga for lunch. then we can go towards chalk hill and back on shiloh and follow backroads to g.v. i will end there and the rest of the group can head back through pocket canyon and towards Sebastopol.

Now that we have all this information on how do do a group ride, can we get together and go riding? How about next weekend, when it's cooler? Anybody????

Last weekend I did a loop out 128 to the mouth of the river and then south via 1 to stewarts point and skaggs. Would love to do it again with the group. But my bike has a problem (coils I think) that will keep me grounded for a bit.

I do agree with what every one is saying .. but for me in group rides half the fun is socializing but the bigger half of group rides is chasing the rabbit .and Steve is the rabbit. On the rides i have been on it seems like the leaders have tried to keep track of everyone ,but even i can see that can be a bit of a task specially if you are trying to enjoy your own ride and not crash.I think no one should take it personal if they get separated from group but see it as an unfortunate thing that can happen and no one is happy about it ,leader or follower. At the end of the day I would say no fast rider wants a slower rider to feel they need to ride faster and equally no slow rider wants the fast rider to slow down. There have been a lot of good suggestions on how to keep the rides together in a group and one more would be that every one in the group be equally responsible for keeping it together and keep track of the rider behind you... and remember to keep the shiny side up...

I agree with the pre-ride briefing. If you're gonna lead a ride you should state whether it's a "wait at every turn for the pack to regroup" or it's a "cluster fluck try to keep up with me" type ride. I for one assume that group rides are the former and not the latter. I've ridden on group rides with lots of clubs and one of the primary rules is to not let someone get left behind. It's dangerous and discourteous. If the slower riders know everyone is waiting, they will tend to stay within their comfort level. I've been on rides where a rider waited at the intersection for the last couple of riders to show up while the rest of the pack went on. Still accomplishes the same thing, no one gets left behind. We are out here to have fun, it's not a race to the lunch spot.

So does informing every rider before we ride about the wait for the next person in line at turn offs or splits sound good to everyone? I just want to make sure everyone continues to ride with us and that we remain attractive to new riders. I really enjoy riding with this group whether we are hauling ass or cruising. I like the group. I especially like that we can talk about this subject. I think you are all terrific people. I'm also amazed at the skill level of the riders in our group. Thanks again for allowing me to be a "part of".

    June 25, 2014

    • Sebastian

Yeah, I think that's all it should take. I've only joined a couple of rides with this group and only one had a slower contingent but Steve waited at every turn, and I've never had the wait be more than a minute or two on that or any other ride. We should just remind ourselves at the start, and if anyone's at a slower pace, assure them they'll be waited for at the next turn and they can ride their own ride with confidence. No need to push past the comfort zone.

I also like when on a dull section or nearing a turn if the group slows a bit it helps pull the group back together. It generally doesn't take much.

I think it is best to get it out on the table Dino. We're all friends here and people getting left behind or worst crashing alone is serious. I didn't ride for well over 20 years and only started again about 2-3 years ago. The only reason I even know about some of these roads is because I hunted in those areas years ago. I never road bikes on them, and many times I don't have a clue where we are. So your concerns are not unfounded. I for one appreciate you speaking up. I've wondered on several occasions how I would ever find my way home if I got separated from the group. Where Gregg fell, I had no idea Calistoga was just 5 miles down the grade. So if you have any concerns please talk about. Yeah, we should ride our own ride but we are also a group!

    1 · June 25, 2014

    • Wade M.

I agree with all of you. I am not a fast rider but was under the assumption that if you knew someone was behind you, it was your duty to wait at a turn off so the rider behind knew which way to go. I don't think it's a matter of speed but of courtesy to make sure no one get left behind or lost. It says in our group credo that anyone is welcome to ride with us. That I thought meant anyone from beginners to pro's or cruisers. I ride in the back because I like to. But for instance, last Sunday I waited at every turn off for the person behind me while my wife rode ahead with the group. But my wife made sure to wait at turn offs for me. Not because I'm slow but because we are a group. I enjoy our diverse group. But I believe as a courtesy that at turn offs or splits that we should make sure before the ride that people are aware that you wait for the person behind you and so on. Just my opinion. Thoughts?

When I was living on the peninsula I rode with a group with a lot of ex racers on lunch rides. I still get to rise with these guys, and gals, called Over The Hill Hooligans, on our annual 5 day ride. It's all I can do to keep up with the second half of the group. I once asked Jeff, the ride leader, if I was too slow for the group. He told me from the fastest guy to the guy riding sweep, it was only about 20 - 30 seconds. This in about a 25-30 mile leg. Jeff will slow down about 1 mile before major turns, (from 1 hwy. to another), and let the group catch up. This system works great for our group of 20 + riders. We regroup at gas stops and at the side of the road after a long fast section. When there was breakdowns or crashes, nobody was ever alone. Those of you who know Mehran, he runs his rides the same way.

Dino, I understand your frustration with your experience on some of Steve's rides. I've been riding with Steve since the start of this group, so I know all too well it's a very loose ride compared to Jennifer's. I guess if someone rode sweep it would help.
I know the general consensus on these rides is it's going to be a fast pace ride. Steve takes off and you better be ready to follow. And I know several times I had to play catch up or get left behind. But, that's the ride and I accept it. It's not for Cruisers but it's far from "Balls Out" either. If you can't ride with Steve within a 70-80% percent comfort level you are in over your head. At some point you will get into trouble on these rides. I think I only rode with you once before. A break off from Jennifer's ride and as I recall you were right in the pack. So I don't see Steve's rides being a big challenge for you. But rider tracking could be better for sure.

    1 · June 24, 2014

    • Kevin J.

Well, I don't know if that's entirely possible Bob. Some of the roads we ride have some pretty tight twisty corners. But I agree that regroups should be addressed better. I think when we have a fairly tight group Steve tends to assume we're all on track and can keep up. I make it a point to try to keep an eye on those behind me when possible. But when the cornering gets aggressive that kind of falls by the way side.

I'm talking about when we turn from one road to another. i.e. Saint Helena rd. to Hwy. 128.

I appreciate your input and i agree, i am not speaking for myself. there have been several instances where people get left behind, forgotten etc.....perhaps i should just keep my mouth shut but i should have just called steve directly and let others speak for themselves....thanks,,,,,I'll just ride my ride

I got the ticket Wade....long story short, it was a clusterf--k....gotta laugh now but i got it goin through an intersection in St. Helena in a pedestrian zone...didn't see it till i passed it.....maybe one of these rides we can keep track of all of our riders.....namely those that perhaps move a bit slower and like to cruise....we really need to wait for them so they don't
get lost or feel left out..U know what I'm saying by chance??????? hint hint ride leader

Mr Bobby Jones "I never learned anything from a tournament i won." Just be glad u went down here cuz everything is bigger in Texas. The sun is bigger the sky is bigger, hell even the cows have bigger horns,so it would reason that the crashes are bigger too, any ways feel better.

Greg is all patched up and doing ok. He is a tough s.o.b. lol. The bike will need quite a bit of t.l.c. but it wont take too much to get it on the road again.thanks to all who helped out and made sure he was ok etc. As usual the group steps up.

I don't know how I started getting these messages, but I love to ride and would love to have a backseat... [masked] I love ridding so much that I recently joined the H.O.G's... Do you have a local monthly meeting or... How do I meet you nice biker folks?

    June 17, 2014

    • Steve G.

This group is for those who want to meet and ride. I am afraid we are not geared to social events at this point. I did send you info...maybe showing up on the sunday ride with gear and asking if there is someone who you could one up with..? My bike is only set up for one and most of the bikes for the saturday ride would not be comfy..but maybe someone on the sunday ride. Good luck.

No meetings with this group Susan. Just for a few minutes the day we ride. As yet no big Harley riders only Buells. And none of them have the passenger pegs on their bikes. Might have to settle for a ride on a import Cruiser or Sport Tourer
