Bird Key Christmas Lights Canal Paddle

Let's check out the decorated homes on Bird key.  We will launch at Bird key Park and paddle around to the canals on Bird key to view the Holiday Lighted homes.

This is for EXPERIENCED paddlers only that can handle wind and waves that can occur in the bay.   No kayaks under 12 ft in length due to these conditions. Everyone MUST WEAR their PFD on this trip.

If you are not sure if you qualify, please email me and we can discuss it.

We will launch at 5:30pm and paddle about 2  1/2 to 3 hrs.  Dress in layers for the weather

Bird Key is an island in Sarasota Bay, south of the Ringling Causeway, between mainland Sarasota and St. Armand's Key. Originally a small island connected to the Ringling Causeway by a tree lined causeway of its own, it was the home of John Ringling North nephew of Circus Magnate, John Ringling. Created by dredge and fill in the late fifties, it is approximately 250 acres  of one of the most prestigious residential areas on Florida's West Coast.

Originally called Bird Key because of the large population of birds that flock to the original island.

Necessary items to bring:   Holiday Spirit,  PFD, whistle, water, snack,  A light for your kayak is also mandatory at night (add Christmas lights if you wish)  Optional:  Camera, bug spray.

Rentals:  Sorry, but rentals are not available for this paddle.

Location:  Bird key Park is located at the foot of the western side of the Ringling Bridge.  If you are coming from Sarasota go over the Ringling Bridge and turn right into the park at the traffic light at the bottom of the bridge.  There is a small beach area and kayak launch at the the eastern tip of the park just past the turn around circle.

We couldn't have asked for more beautiful weather. The bay was choppy but the canals were smooth. Fun paddling with everyone and hanging out at O'Leary's afterward. Love that Jimmy Buffet music too!

What is it about night paddles that makes soo much fun? A little choppy water which I loved and touched base with new and old friends. Great night, Judy, thanks.
