August Book Discussion - Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood

Join us in August for a discussion featuring one of the great Margaret Atwood's works.

More on the book below...

"Cat's Eye" is the story of Elaine Risley, a controversial painter who returns to Toronto, the city of her youth, for a retrospective of her art. Engulfed by vivid images of the past, she reminisces about a trio of girls who initiated her into the fierce politics of childhood and its secret world of friendship, longing, and betrayal. Elaine must come to terms with her own identity as a daughter, a lover, and artist, and woman - but above all she must seek release from her haunting memories. Disturbing, hilarious, and compassionate, "Cat's Eye, " is a breathtaking novel of a woman grappling with the tangled knots of her life.

A former member hit it out of the ball park. That quote goes a long way to doing what you say.

Hey! To the ladies at the first table, I found that quote! The one that I felt really encapsulated the book...

"With enemies you can feel hatred, and anger. But Cordelia is my friend. She likes me, she wants to help me, they all do. They are my friends, my girl friends, my best friends. I have never had any before and I'm terrified of losing them. I want to please. Hatred would have been easier. With hatred, I would have known what to do. Hatred is clear, metallic, one-handed, unwavering; unlike love." Leave it to the amazing Margaret Atwood to sum it all up in a paragraph. Again, wonderful choice... The discussion and meal were just delightful... Thank you! ;)

I am enjoying the different from her "futuristic" ones. I am interested to see how the discussion goes...for example has the group developed norms that facilitate the discussion?

Staci, and Kelly originally, have always come to the meeting with thought provoking questions about the book and author. Because it's dinner, other conversations tend to naturally take place but some of us original diehards at some point try to bring it back to the book! We love to hear all opinions of the book from everyone, so we take turns discussing the questions. The questions guide but don't rule, and we always appreciate having them.
Many times, if we're at a large table, we divide the conversation into smaller groups so that we're not straining to hear each other.
It is a great group of women.

Hi Judy, I am sure the discussion will flow naturally and since this was a "woman's" book, we will all have something to say about it... If we get stalled, which I don't think will happen, let's hope that Staci gets us out!!! Just joking... See you all tomorrow.

I always have questions to help drive discussion, so we should have plenty to keep us talking. See you tomorrow.

Hi all, just a reminder that we're meeting this Wednesday night. If you've reserved a spot but can no longer make it, please change your RSVP so those on the waiting list can take your spot. Thanks much.

Just finished the book this morning... Really enjoyed it! I was born in Ontario and spent summers in Toronto with my extended family... This story evoked whispers of my own childhood... Lovely! Looking forward to dinner and discussion of this book! Kudos on the wonderful choice! ;)

Cat's Eye sounds great. If we need a location and if it's most convenient for all to be around Main Street how about Mediterraneo or Café Americana?

Thanks Maria. We're all set on a locale. See you next month.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
