Fabulous Ft. DeSoto Park...Walk or Bike

Come today on an adventure into the past!! We will be headed to historic Fort De Soto and one of Florida's most spectacular parks. Located with view of the Skyway Bridge this fabulous waterfront/beach destination is also a great place to camp and bike and hiking trails abound. We will be meeting at the park headquarters as you enter the park it is straight ahead. We can choose a variety of routes(we will be doing the north end of the island today) . Some may want to come early and hang out for the day and do some beaching and others may want to take in the historic sites. We will walk about 2 hours and then head to Billy's in Terra Vierdi for a little late afternoon music and snack, while enjoying the waterfront views and sunset.    For further info on this site please visit: If you are interested in organizing a carpool send a message!

For those who choose to bike...this is an opportunity to explore the park and surrounding areas by bike.  If you plan to bike let me know .....we will be putting a group together that will bike the 2 hours and meet us following.

Guess we have to wait for off season on this...in January we have been aced by cool breezes.

Sorry this time we got aced out...This is a walk that we have done repeatedly and with a lot of success...stopping at the headquarters we were able to get the brochures and trail guide. Having traffic challenges I got there late and enjoyed a personal walk going east and later west as well...but not to the fort. In the past we have had this walk in the morning and in the afternoon. My best guess is that Sat. ...late morning is the best time to walk with a stop at Billys for lunch. For those who made it to Billy's , we enjoyed some of the best seafood in the area and great musical entertainment...not to mention the out-standing views. The fees are a new addition and annoying...they started about 2 years ago...but since this is not something that we do on a regular basis , it gives people an idea of what this special location is about. If we missed anyone in the confusion or the drive we are sorry about that. If you did not cancel...it presented challenges as well.

I arrived at the "flag pole" at the park headquarters only after getting a return phone call back from Carolyn, two of us had stopped at the entrance to the first park, on the right, which said DeSoto Park. The tolls were annoying, and unknown to me, except the $1.25 for the Skyway bridge which was each way. When we arrived there was a total of 7 of us there. We walked east along the beach toward the bridge and stopped to use the restroom facilities and I found that area full of sand burrs since I was bare foot. We decided to go visit the fort and even had difficulty finding that, at this point the group was split up. The park is a county park and lacked signage one would find in a state or national park. Access was not allowed on top of the fort, and you were left guessing about the history and items there.
