Get Shorties! Serrania Ridge and Corbin Canyon Trails

Serrania Park (map)

Selected By: Shawn

We haven’t been West of the 405 for months, so will try to make up for lost time with a one-two (or three) punch in a few urban pocket parks in the West Valley. Do one, do two or take on all three and be back before lunch.

The first two are both short, beginner hikes, perfect for members new to hiking or just returning to it. One offers expansive views from above, the second is a canyon stroll with views looking up to some gorgeous homes and greenery.

Depending on the weather (it’s supposed to cool down this weekend), there’ll be an optional third hike in the ‘hood for those who want to get in a little more of a workout.

We’ll start at Serrania Ridge, a single-track trail nestled between the Woodland Hills Club to the West and Chalk Hills to the East. The trail starts a little steeply, then rolls up and down a bit enroute to the halfway point at Mulholland Drive, with lovely, unimpeded views of the Santa Susana mountains in the distance to the North.  Other than a lone oak enroute and another at the turnaround point, the route is exposed, so bring sunscreen, a hat and water.

Distance: 2.2 miles, 500 ft. elevation gain, out and back trail, probably 90 minutes. Dogs on leash welcome. There are restrooms and water at the trailhead, as well as a playground and picnic tables. We’ll stop for a swing on the monkey bars and a snack after returning to the trailhead, before embarking on trail #2.

We’ll carpool for the ~10-minute drive to Corbin Canyon, a secluded little trail that starts in the middle of a neighborhood, but quickly escapes civilization. This 1.2 mile, virtually-flat walk is on a well-maintained trail on the East side. We’ll return via the slightly more wild (e.g. overgrown) West side route, so you may want to opt for long pants vs. shorts. Probably 45 minutes. We’ll then return any carpoolers back to our starting point at Serrania Ridge.

Finally, for those just getting warmed up – if the weather isn’t too warm – I’d like to check out the Caballero Canyon Trail in the nearby Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park. Distance is 4.2 miles, elevation gain 1,000 feet, probably about 2 hours, advanced beginner to moderate. More details available on Saturday for anyone interested. If you are considering doing this hike, however, take any valuables out of your car before leaving the house. Trailhead parking is on the street and even though it’s a nice ‘hood, across from a country club,  it’s probably obvious car owners will be away from their vehicles for a few hours.

Directions

We’ll meet at Serrania Park, 20864 Wells Dr., Woodland Hills.

From the 101 Freeway, exit at DeSoto and head South for .7 mile.

DeSoto become Serrania Ave., then veer to the left/East on Wells Drive.

The entrance to the park will be the first driveway on your right.

Free parking in the lot.
