To help us be a self sustaining group (to cover the annual meet up organizer fees), we will be hosting a fundraiser with our Boston to MOS paddle. Cost is $5.00 per person to RSVP. Cash or online payment via credit card (see Meetup's Chip In button). If paying via credit card, please make the online payment prior to the event. Donations are non refundable.
Note: Members who have already made a $10 or more donation earlier this year can RSVP and don't need to pay the $5.00
How about enjoying a leisurely kayak on one of the most scenic sections of the Charles River? We will be starting from Charles River Boston in Allston/Brighton and head downstream past (Harvard, M.I.T., and B.U.) to the Hatch Shell Esplanade (a great picnic spot!) and Museum of Science all while enjoying views of the unforgettable Boston skyline.
This approximately nine-mile round trip stretch of river has no current, allowing painless round trips. Pack a snack/lunch and water.
Time: 11:30 am to meet in front of the rental booth (paddle time, approximately 4 hours on the water, plus time for a lunch break, paddle speed about 2-3 mph. Persons planning rentals, please arrive 20-30 minutes early to start the paperwork.) The plan is to launch the kayaks at 11:45 am.
Kayak rentals are available through Charles River Kayak and Rental http://www.paddleboston.com/boston.php
Location: Charles River Canoe and Kayak,Boston Location, in Allston/Brighton, 1071 Soldier's Field Road Boston (Allston/Brighton), Massachusetts in front of the rental booth.
Parking: Free Parking is available at the Charles River Canoe and Kayak, in the first, second (closest, marked by the "boat rental" sign), or third parking lot on the right. (The parking lot signs say 2 hour parking, but according to Charles River Rental, this does not apply to those kayaking/canoeing). Additional parking is at the Christian Herter Park, parking lot (it’s a big lot next to Charles River Canoe and kayak). You can use Google maps to get a visual of the parking lots.
Driving tip for those bringing kayaks: If you are using Google maps, the address, 1071 Soldiers Field Road, Boston, will take you to the third parking lot on the right. Since you will be off loading your kayak may want to pull into the 2nd parking lot (which is closest to the rental/ramp location).
Please note that the GPS coordinates on these web pages are sometimes a bit off. Please take written directions with you as a backup (and also in case your GPS is not functioning).
For members bringing their own kayak: the plan is to meet with the kayaks, by the Charles River Canoe and kayak boat ramp, which is next to the rental booth. If you don’t get a nearby parking space, you can unload your kayak in the parking lot and we can watch your gear, while you park at the adjacent lots. (If you park at Herter Park, you can have the option of paddling back to Herter Park to pull out your kayak.)
Post Kayak Options: Stonehearth Pizza, 182 Western Avenue, Allston, MA http://stonehearthpizza.com/ or Abbotts Frozen Custard, 360 Washington St
