The Essex Marsh and Choate Island route, just one hour north of Boston, offers splendid paddling!

Join us as we explore the tidal estuaries of the Essex River, paddle down the Essex River to the Essex River basin and Choate Island, and then settle beach side at the Island for a lunch break ( and optional hike to the top of the island for a glorious view)  before heading back.

The Essex River Basin is one of the most exquisite places to paddle north of Boston. There are thousands of acres of beautiful salt marsh; a scenic island for picnicking; and extensive bird life.

Open to all Sea and recreational kayaks longer than 12 feet with bulkheads or floatation bags.

Approximate time will be 4-5 hours (with a lunch break at the Island).

Total distance will be between 8 and 10 miles .

Gear:  Bring your kayak and a spray skirt in case you need one.

If you need to rent, you can contact Essex River Basin Adventures (ERBA) note; you will need a car and kayak  rack , 1 Main Street, Essex, MA 01929  [masked]

Those renting kayaks should be mindful of return time.  It wouldn't be right to force others to cut short their trip because you need to return your rental kayak.

Important! You will need to be competent in Self and Assisted Rescues. PFD required.

We may encounter some boat traffic and or unexpected swells caused by wind, current or tide. We can try to avoid them as much as possible by staying in more protected areas.

Would love to go, but don't dare attempt that picking up my 18' tandem and putting it on top of my vehicle, taking it off, etc. until my hernia is repaired next year. Until then, not going kayaking (at least with my kayak). :-( Been wanting to hit Choate island for over a year now...
