"Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas" by John Scalzi

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nd49VTG6Lfk/UC1eolAGfmI/AAAAAAAACfg/cdKON0RCaTQ/s1600/Redshirts.jpgEnsign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. It’s a prestige posting, and Andrew is thrilled all the more to be assigned to the ship’s Xenobiology laboratory. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the fact that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces, (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations, and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed. Not surprisingly, a great deal of energy below decks is expendedon avoiding, at all costs, being assigned to an Away Mission. Then Andrew stumbles on information that completely transforms his and his colleagues’ understanding of what the starship Intrepid really is…and offers them a crazy, high-risk chance to save their own lives.

I felt the book was a fun, light-hearted read that most would enjoy if they have some familiarity with the subject matter. I felt the main story was better than the Codas, though they did add a little bit of closure to aspects of the story.

May be a little late. Lots of last minute stuff came up at work. Just about to leave now w/a 30-50 minute drive home. 10 minute or do drive to mall, more with traffic... Bringing Scot again.

Just a friendly reminder that we are meeting at the Buckland Hills Mall again. Go to the food court upstairs, and we'll be in the back behind the carousel.

The library is out for Wednesdays in December. I say we just camp out in the Santa Claus area in the mall and play Cards Against Humanity.

Literal laugh out loud (isn't it sad that I have to specify that?). Thanks for checking Matt, we'll figure it out.

    The Wheaton narration is great.

I know not everyone is sold on audiobooks. But I thought I should point out that the audiobook version of Redshirts is narrated by none other than Wil Wheaton.

It's funny after reading your profile, but I just finished Brave New World. After Redshirts, I dunno what I'll be reading next - I have a bunch of stuff waiting for me on my Kindle.
