First book discussion: NEUROMANCER by William Gibson

For our first book we will be reading the "seminal work in the cyberpunk genre" (thanks Wikipedia), William Gibson's Neuromancer!

I think it's a pretty good choice for our first read, and I hope you're all as excited as I am to dig into it!

You may have noticed I put a cap in place at 20 attendees. Considering how large our group was last time, I'm thinking this is the most people Barrique's can comfortably accommodate without reserving the the whole mezzanine level (which would cost $$) and probably the absolute max for a quiet-ish discussion where we don't have to split up into smaller sub-groups.

Since there's already a waitlist, please update your RSVP status if you find out you won't be able to attend, so someone else can take your spot. Otherwise, come ready to enjoy an evening of coffee/tea and literary discourse!

That was a fun first meetup for me! I'm excited to get to know more about the genre...I don't know a lot about scifi as I thought! Yay learning! Looking forward to next time! (also, TOTALLY am up for suggested music. Nothing like setting the scene with multiple senses!)

It was a great meetup for me, too; although it made me feel 1. old and 2. like the village idiot. Actually, I already felt like both of those so never mind. :)

Hey, we're all old village idiots at heart...that's why we get together in groups! :)

Hey all! Really enjoyed the meetup today. In case any of you are interested in going to see sci-fi movies as a group, here is a trailer for Snowpiercer:

Since I'd rather not further spam a book club Meetup with movie stuff, feel free to friend me on Facebook and I can create events there:

The cyberpunk comic book series I mentioned was "Transmetropolitan" by Warren Ellis. If you're planning on re-reading "Neuromancer" or picking up the rest of the Sprawl trilogy, I recommend doing so while listening to this album by Perturbator (cyberpunk/new retro wave music):

Looking forward to discussing "The Man in the High Castle" next time

Great suggestions! And I think "recommended further reading" is definitely a feature we should incorporate into future meetings.

      3 · July 24, 2014

    • Don

I think "recommended auditory accompaniment" is one helluva good subtopic, as well.

Great to listen to all of your perspectives! I can't wait for the Meiville book, up next.
I know that it's a bit off-topic, but for those of you into music, I hear this sort of music: https://soundcloud.com/superspink/robot-city , while reading Gibson's stories.
If I'm muted for offering corollary media, such is the life.
Again, great to chat with all of you in attendance.

Lots of laughs, good talking points and direction from our delightful organizer.

Aw, thanks Andrew! And thanks to all who came out!

My grandfather just passed away, so will not be able to attend. Sorry about the literal, last minute notification. But need to be with family right now! I am eager to find out about the next book, and wish I could come. I was like, 2 chapters away from finishing Neuromancer!

    July 24, 2014

    • Dana B

Mel, I am so sorry and of course I understand. My best to you and your family. Hope to see you at our next meet.

Rats. Had a meeting get scheduled for Thursday night so I have to bail out. Hope that frees up a space for someone.

    July 22, 2014

  • Don

I'm in on this one, but... I think in the future, I'm going to be an every other booker. My schedule doesn't allow me enough time to keep up with a two-week cycle. I hope that we're still planning to know what's coming up next, so I can keep up.

    July 22, 2014

    • Dana B

Yes, hopefully we will decide our next book at the meeting tomorrow, or I'll post another poll and we can vote. Either way, you'll have at least three weeks notice.

      July 23, 2014

  • Michelle B.

Hey Dana, it says I'm on the waiting list...does this mean I can't come unless someone doesn't come, or is ok to head on over? Thanks :)

    July 4, 2014

    • Michelle B.

so it helps to read, ironic enough as it is, seeing as it's a book club....(aka, I see the answer to my question written above!)

      July 4, 2014

    • Dana B

Sorry for the delay, Michelle. I'm not too familiar with how Meetup's waitlist works, but I think if someone changes their RSVP from "yes" to "no," Meetup automatically bumps up the first waitlister who RSVP'd. So if you're waitlisted, you probably want to read the book just in case!

  • Michelle B.

Looking forward to meeting up with fellow bookies!

I'm anticipating the results of this vote more than the last several elections... this vote will probably affect my life more immediately, anyway.

    1 · June 30, 2014

    • Dana B

I know what you mean! I'm glad there's at least one majority vote this week I can agree with.

I started "Neuromancer" a few years ago but didn't make it very far. I'll be happy to try it again! I've found I like William Gibson's writing. I'm in the middle of "Zero History" right now, in fact.

      July 1, 2014

  • Drew

Hey, this looks like my kind of place! I've been reading/watching sci-fi and related genres for decades.
