Let's go to the movies! Blackfish!

UPDATE: The cheaper tickets are sold out, BUT YOU CAN STILL COME! Just show up and buy a regularly-priced ticket ($11). See you there!

You MUST buy your ticket here, via the RSVP/Paypal interface in order to get the $8 price.

This is a must-see movie. It's gonna hit you hard in the gut, but very important nonetheless.

5:00-6:30 pm: Let's gather at Brazen BBQ Smokehouse & Bar (441 Washington at 5th, Hillcrest), across the street from the theater, for a quick drink/appetizer before hitting the theater. In addition to happy hour specials, they are extending a 15% discount to our group on all food items! (alcohol excluded)

6:45 pm- Meet Bill in front of the theater to get your ticket.

7:00-7:15 pm- Seating begins for this showing. Go into theater and find a seat. (Not necessary for us to sit together, but if you go in early you can probably get a bunch of seats.)

Theater reports this will be the most popular show time (even on a Monday) and this movie is generating some buzz, so DON'T wait until the last minute!

7:25 pm- Go into theater (if you haven't already) and get your seat. *** Bill will wrap things up outside and come in presently himself *** No ticket distribution after this.

7:45 pm- Movie starts.

COST: $8.54 per ticket when you RSVP and pay to the right. ($11 at the door.)

NOTE: We only have 25 tickets at this price... and they are now all spoken for... but you can still join us. Simply show up and buy a regular ticket at the window!

Many of us have experienced the excitement and awe of watching 8,000-pound orcas, or "killer whales," soar out of the water and fly through the air at sea parks, as if in perfect harmony with their trainers. Yet, in our contemporary lore this mighty black-and-white mammal is like a two-faced Janus—beloved as a majestic, friendly giant yet infamous for its capacity to kill viciously. The documentary Blackfish unravels the complexities of this dichotomy, employing the story of notorious performing whale Tilikum, who—unlike any orca in the wild—has taken the lives of several people while in captivity. So what exactly went wrong? Shocking, never-before-seen footage and riveting interviews with trainers and experts manifest the orca's extraordinary nature, the cruel treatment of the species  in captivity over the last four decades, and the growing disillusionment of workers who were misled and endangered by the highly profitable sea-park industry. This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals.

Except for the savage neck pain that descended upon me (hazards of being tall), I had a great time and thought the movie very well done. I'm glad I got to watch it with you all. What did YOU think of the movie?

Informative and direct, but sad. I keep thinking about that whale in isolation in the small "rectangle tank "

Apologies for the late cancellation. A mini-crisis at work back in the UK means I have to burn the midnight oil. Anyone who wants to use my ticket may do so.

Folks. I am not going to make the movie tonight. Anyone who wants to go in my place can just have my ticket.

A reminder that parking is validated for movie attendees for three hours in the Village Hillcrest Garage (beneath the theaters). For those of us attending the pre-movie happy hour, we'll probably go over that three hour limit. Not sure how much parking is beyond three hours, just be advised that you might have to cough up a few bucks to get out of the garage if that's the case. I'll probably scan for surface street parking a bit.

Just this past Saturday, when we returned from our most excellent Yukon dives around noon, driving past Sea World there were hundreds of protesters out in force. Traffic was backed up, cops galore. Quite the scene. "Blackfish" was written on several of their signs.

Gang, to throw a little (more) icing on the cake, Brazen BBQ is extending a 15% discount on food items to our non-profit group. So be sure to tell the server you're with Power Scuba to get the discount. See you at Brazen BBQ next week!
