Bill and Rod's Amazing End of Summer Picnic & Dive!

This location is shown only to members

Potluck-style. Bring a "heavy" appetizer or main dish. State in your RSVP what you're bringing!

Major Raffle At This Event! Bring some money to buy extra tickets!

Prize-Eggs placed on the bottom for divers to find!

Bill (Power Scuba) and Rod (Roddenberry Dive Team) have another wonderful End of Summer event planned! Oct 2nd at 10 am. There will be picnic-ing, food, volleyball, maybe a surprise or two... and swimming and diving on a beach voted tops in many country-wide surveys.

NEW VENUE! BREAKERS BEACH on Coronado. This is the same beach the famous Hotel Del Coronado sits on. We have cabanas on the sand, the water close by, and lifeguards on-duty! (And parking!)

DIVE: Optional dive is in-water around 9:00 am. (I'lll have donuts for most everyone beforehand.) Expect a sand dive, but most of you have never dove here before so it's definitely worth a try. You never know what you're going to see in the open ocean! (You can dive anytime throughout the day, but we'd like to have you present for the picnic!)

We've placed a few prize eggs on the bottom. Retrieve them and turn them in for some small prizes. One egg per diver please.

POT LUCK! Everyone must bring a dish (heavy appetizer or main course... no chips) enough to feed just three to four people (or more if you're feeling generous). INDICATE IN YOUR RSVP WHAT YOU'LL BE BRINGING. (If you're bringing guests please ask them to bring something as well (or increase your amount).

FOOD SUGGESTIONS: Hamburgers & buns/ fried chicken/ chicken wings/ fried rice/potato salad/ brats and buns/ macaroni salad/ meatballs/ baked beans/ lotsa soda/ steak/ chili/ chinese dumplings/ sushi/ chiken, beef, pork-on-a-stick/ bar-b-q ribs/ fried chicken/ empanadas/ corn-on-the-cob/ three-cheese dip/ moon pies/ adobo/ guacamole dip/ pie/ cake/ Thai food/ YOUR OWN SPECIALTY!

Bring covers for your food to keep the sand and flies away.

Please cook whatever you bring yourself. No one will do it for you. There will be grills on-site to cook on, but they're typical park grills. If you have one to bring go ahead. We might need it.

No glass allowed on beach.

THE BEER AND WINE ARE ON US! Power Scuba and Roddenberry Dive Team are throwing a few bucks into the kitty to make the day extra special. (DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE... OR DIVE!)

EVENTS SCHEDULE: Pre-event setup starts at 8 am. Come help out! 1)Dive around 9:30 am 2)Picnic officially begins at 10 am 3)Egg Races (winner gets to choose his own group nickname. {Yolk Master?}) 4)Assorted other contests 5)Begin Attack On The Food Line around 11:30 pm 6) Volleyball and horseshoes throughout the day 7)Group photo at 2:30 pm 8)Raffle in the afternoon 9)Start breaking down around 4 pm 10)Another dive after 4 pm (for the non-drinkers)

WHAT TO BRING: Sunblock, hats, beach chairs, towels, sunglasses, mats, your pot luck dish, money for extra raffle tickets, etc

This will be the fifth EOS event... help us carry on the fun tradition! If you make nothing else this summer, make THIS event! We want to see you all there!

GETTING ON BASE AT NAVAL AIR STATION NORTH ISLAND (Coronado): Your names have been placed on a base access list. (Hopefully you provided the name info I asked for.) DRIVERS: Make sure you bring your drivers license, registration, and vehicle insurance else they won't let you on base. PASSENGERS: Make sure your bring a valid form of ID. Carpool if you can.

FOREIGN NATIONALS: Please bring your passport/greencard with you. Sorry for the hassle, but this IS a military-owned beach we're going to. This is necessary for your access.

DIRECTIONS: From I-5 north or south, exit at Coronado Bridge on Hwy 75. Continue past old toll plaza which becomes 3rd Street. About two miles on 3rd Street takes you directly into the main gate of the base. (Stop and identify yourself as a Power Scuba event attendee. Show ID.) Follow road straight out from main gate 1/4 mile and turn left on Rogers Road. Follow Rogers Road two miles... Navy Lodge (and our cabanas) is on the left. Here is a rough map of the final mile to our cabanas: http://photos4.meetup...

CABANAS LOCATION: We will be at the cabanas behind the Navy Lodge on the beach. There'll be scuba banners and such. You won't miss us. (Notice the large lifeguard tower off to the left.)

PARKING: Drop all your things off at the cabanas (at the back of the Navy Lodge parking lot) FIRST, then park at either Breakers Beach parking lot (small-ish) -OR-directly across the street from the Navy Lodge, behind the building (large lot). Don't park in the Navy Lodge parking lot or any no-parking zones. They will tow.

RAFFLE!

RAFFLE: Some manufacturers, dive stores, and local businesses have given us prizes to use in our raffle. Some very FANTASTIC prizes, I might add. Each Power Scuba (or RDT) member will get one free raffle ticket to use as they please. Additional raffle tickets (benefiting Power Scuba group fund) will be available to purchase. Look for Darlene in the Raffle Tent when you get there!

RAFFLE SPONSORS: The following sponsors have kindly contributed product for our event raffle. Please show them your appreciation and support: Aqualung, Atomic, Scuba Pro, Manta Ray Fins, Diving Unlimited International (DUI), Ocean Enterprises, Dive California, IB Divers, Scuba Shack, Horizon Dive Charters, Lois Ann Dive Charters, Lowe's Home Improvement, Chammyz, Mona Lisa restaurant, Doug Ernst, Kelli Shaw, Power Scuba Lessons, more to be announced.

Huge thanks to Kelli Shaw for taking the lead in interfacing with our sponsors and procuring many of these great raffle prizes.

(This will be an official "no flake" event. If you RSVP "Yes" then we'll expect you there with bells on!)

Lifeguard Douglas Martine, of the North Island Lifeguard Services (encompasses Breakers beach) has just today affirmed to me that diving is allowed off Breakers Beach. You can also, if you choose, bring a scuba kyak and paddle over the rock jetty (a little less than a mile away) if you're craving some structure.

Some equipment MAY have been placed offshore in the past. Possible "artificial reef"/point of interest. Can any of you guys who work on base find out precisely where it is?

Did anyone end up with a purple California Concepts cooler and/or an orange/gray/gray cooler with a quick reach top? I brought them as extras for ice. They were empty and stacked together towards the back of the food cabana. There’s also a lonely piece of tuppwerware out there that had some pinwheels in it at one point.
Thanks to the group’s members for guidance and advice. Thanks to the vendors for the swag. I’m especially thankful for so many new friends.

Wife and I had a great time! I didn't get to dive but I hear vis was low anyway. great food, great people, great prizes, great beers, great fun! Another way to do the raffle when there's lost of prizes and lots of people:: EVERYONE writes their name on the tickets, then draw a ticket every30 minutes. Write the prize on the ticket and hang or tape it to the prize pole, that way as people are playing a game or diving they can check the pole to see if they won. BUT In order to receive their prize they must see the photographer/recorder for a photo and keep track of who got what.
