Catalina Island Diving Weekend... For CHEAP! (Cabins)

  • Apr 26, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This event page is for the camping cabins ashore.

*** LAST MINUTE INFO ***

  • Do not leave your gear/stuff on the boat between dives.
  • Bringing a camp chair will be a good thing.
  • If we are able to get the Ranger Truck (my request is submitted) to bring our gear to the cabins, toss me a few dollars to help pay for it.
  • Group Picture at 2 pm Sunday at the dive shop.
  • Bring foam earplugs in case things are wild-ish.
  • Calm the partying activity down in the Commons Kitchen by 11 pm please (people need to dive the next day.)
  • Join us in the town bar for drinks after our Saturday night dinner and toga party (extra credit to anyone who wears their toga into the bar!).
  • Do support the town bar, restaurant, deli, and convenience store.
  • Boat leaves for home around 2:45 pm on Sunday.

UPDATE: Toga Party & Games!

The cost of a single night at a Catalina hotel ALONE could easily surpass our cost for this entire weekend of fun. I love the relaxed, laid-back atmosphere at Two Harbors. It's quaint, picturesque, and oh yeah, the diving is pretty darned good!

Value! I've done this trip many times before and I must say, it's the best value-for-money you're likely to see in SoCal diving! Round-trip transport to the island, two-tank boat dive, shore diving, sleeping cabins, hot showers, and a one-pub crawl.

EXTRA SUNDAY MORNING 2-TANK DIVE BOAT: Find it on our calendar under April 28!

Chef Doug will be cooking dinner on Sat night. It's optional, but very worth the few dollars extra you'll pay ($13). Click here: Chef Doug's Sat Night Dinner!

DETAILS:

WHEN: April 26th - April 28 (Fri morning - Sun afternoon)

WHERE: Two Harbors, Catalina Island

COST: $175 for divers or $104 for non-divers (linens are extra and can be signed up for on the separate event page)... this is the total cost to you. Pay via Paypal when you RSVP to the right. Safe and secure. I've used it for years.)

WHAT'S INCLUDED:
1. Two-person cabins (spartan, but very decent) (Bring your own linens/sleeping bags -OR- for an extra $14.50 {single bunk} the hotel will provided linens to you. {$25.50 for a double bed}. Linens can be requested on the LINENS PAGE CLOSED.
2. Community bathrooms and showers. Lots of hot water, but remember you're on an island.
3. Two-tank dive boat trip on Saturday... probably in the afternoon.

  • Pacific Star: Steel 72 tanks provided or you may bring your own. Good idea to bring your own weights.)
  • Cee Ray: Bring all your own gear. No tanks provided. Air (only) compressor fills to 3,00 psi.

4. Unlimited use of five free kayaks at the dive shop. 1st come, 1st served. (These will go quickly, so no sad faces at the shop owner if you have to rent one instead). 50% off remaining kayak rental.
5. Round trip transportation from the mainland. (Either on the Catalina Express or the Pacific Star.)
6. Hiking (Watch out for the buffalo droppings)
7. Beach lounging
8. Coffee, juice, & danishes/croissants on Sat and Sun mornings.

9. Grills and SOME cooking gear, dish soap, etc up at the pavilion. Don't count on alot.

WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED:
1. Most food. Bring a cooler with your own meat and sides. (And stuff to cook with.) There are grills in the cabin commons area. There is also a nice deli and restaurant a few steps from the cabins, but they don't open very early in the morning.
2. Shore Diving- $20 for unlimited air fills, tanks, and weights or $6.40 per fill. (Tanks and weights provided only if you buy the $20 package.) Payable directly to the dive store.
3. Linens for your bunk.
4. Scuba gear. The dive shop has a limited amount of gear to rent. (1/2 price for us.) I wouldn't count on it lasting long. My advice, bring yours or rent from the mainland.
5. Booze. Bring some of your own for the Sat night dinner and/or join us after dinner at the towns only bar for a few drinks.

COST: $175 for divers or $104 for non-divers (linens are extra)... this is the total cost to you. Pay via Paypal when you RSVP to the right. Safe and secure. I've used it for years.)

If you're bringing a guest, please state whether they're a Diver or Non-Diver in your RSVP.

WHAT IF YOU'RE GOING IT SOLO: That's o-k. You'll be teamed up with a same gender person for your cabin (if possible). Individuals welcome! You can buddy up with another person for diving as well.

CABINS: Two-person bunk-bed style cabins. Heated. Small-ish, but do the job. There are a small number of double-bed cabins on a "first ask" (in your RSVP) basis.

MAINLAND TRANSPORT: We'll be divided up fairly evenly between the Pacific Star (San Pedro) and the Cee Ray (Long Beach). Arrive at your transportation site EARLY! Traffic can become bad with the drop of a hat.

TRANSPORTATION SCHEDULE: I've put a spreadsheet up in More--> Files--> Two Harbors APRIL 2013 MASTER LIST detailing who goes on the Pacific Star (San Pedro) and who goes on the Cee Ray (Long Beach). Give it a hard look.DON'T SHOW UP AT THE WRONG TRANSPORT LOCATION.

  • Pacific Star (141 W. 22nd Street San Pedro, CA) Boarding: Boat boards at 10 am and leaves the dock around 11:30 am.
  • Cee Ray (555 Pico Avenue Long Beach, CA 90802) Boarding: Boat boards at 10:30 am and leaves around 12 pm.

Pacific Star diving: Pacific Star Boat has free steel LP 72s (overfilled to an 80's-worth of gas) for your use on the boat or you may bring your own tank(s) (maximum of two). Caveat: Their compressor only fills to an LP steel's pressure limit. Maybe 3,000 psi if things are going well that day. No 3,450 PSI fills on this boat unfortunately. Boat pumps Nitrox into O2-clean tanks (only). $8 per fill. You may bring your own O2-clean (dedicated) Nitrox tank, but bring it full.

Cee Ray Diving: Bring all your own gear, including tanks. Air compressor pumps to 3,000 psi only, so best to bring LP steel or aluminum tanks if you're diving on this boat. No nitrox available.

MINUTIA 1: I'll need your full name.
MINUTIA 2: I'll need full names of all your guests. (You are responsible for their payments.)
MINUTIA 3: If you want linens for your bunk you must RSVP on the separate event page found here. ($14.50 per person or $25.50 per couple {if you selected a double bed}.)
MINUTIA 4: Make sure to tell me if you want a double bed (instead of bunk beds). First ask (in your RSVP to the right), first served. No guarantees.
MINUTIA 5: Let me know whether you want to be on the Sat morning dive boat or the Sat afternoon dive boat. You may not get your first desire depending on what fills up quickest.
MINUTIA 6: Let me know if you'd like to do a SECOND boat dive on Saturday afternoon. (Extra cost of $50. Based on availability.)
MINUTIA 7: (Foam earplugs can be helpful as partying noise from nearby tenters (!) and other cabins can manifest.)

MINUTIA 8: I have placed the bunk assignment, dive boat assignment, and linen request spreadsheet in our Files section.

MINUTIA 9: The Saturday dive boat will BOARD at 7:15/7:30 am (morning) and 12:15/12:30 pm (afternoon).

REFUND POLICY

If you back out within 45 days of us leaving you will forfeit half your trip cost* in order for us to entice another diver to take your spot. If you back out within 30 days you will forfeit your entire trip cost (If no diver takes your spot). (*All refunds subject to a .31 Paypal fee and 9% admin fee.)

Moral of the story: PLEASE don't back out once committed. It makes life very difficult for the organizer.

Pointers:

  • Bring your certification card
  • Don't overpack
  • Hydrate really well for the boat trips.
  • Take Bonine if you think you're at all inclined toward seasickness. If you aren't sure... take some Bonine (or similar)!
  • Eat a decent, non-greasy breakfast.
  • Bring something to keep you warm between dives (overcoat, boat jacket, etc).
  • Bring a torch for peering into nooks and crannies.
  • End your dives close to the boat (unless you enjoy long surface swims).
  • ALWAYS bring your dive essentials: A safety sausage, knife, and whistle (at a minimum)!
  • Don't forget to tip the boat crew if they do a good job for you. This one's just as important as any other point in this list. The DM is there for your safety. Take care of him/her!

Boat Etiquette Reminder:

  • Show up on-time.
  • Space is limited on a boat. Stow all your gear where directed to by crew.
  • Keep gear out of the walk-way
  • Put your fins on at drop-in point (not forward and then flip flop over people's feet and gear).
  • Don't rinse your mask or other gear in the CAMERA BUCKET!
  • Don't clog up the marine head with baby ruth bars or similar.
  • If you have to puke, do it downwind (leeward).
  • If you have to cancel, do it well before the cutoff time so Bill has a chance to sell your seat.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

ADMIN STUFF:

The Virtual Donation Jar will be out (for the Meetup site costs and general fund). It's strictly voluntary, but is very much appreciated and needed: DONATION JAR

If you have not filled out a liability release for Power Scuba Meetup, please follow this link to the file, print, sign and bring to the event, along with your C-Card (scuba certification card). You only need to do this once a year: Liability Release and Assumption of Risk

You must also read this: Disclaimer and Clarification... AKA Terms and Conditions

Anyone with a medical condition possibly counter-indicitive to diving must have a doctors signature on a diving waiver form and submit signed form to Bill Powers (or an organizer) before they may attend any Power Scuba event. YOU MAY NOT ATTEND AN EVENT WITH AN UNDISCLOSED MEDICAL CONDITION. Doing so is grounds for expulsion from the group. Here is our medical statement: Medical Statement Therein you'll find a Doctor Waiver form as well.

Attending any scuba event Power Scuba facilitates constitutes attendee's affirmation they are medically fit to dive, have read the Terms and Conditions, and have submitted a signed Liability Release to an organizer.

Important Note: It is not the organizer's role to lead your dive. He/she merely facilitates you getting to the pre-dive meeting location. The Organizer will not assign you a buddy nor will he/she be leading the dive as a "group dive". Visibility and liability do not allow for that. Nor will the Organizer tell you whether you are skilled enough to make any particular dive. That is for you (only) to decide. When you enter the water, you (and your buddy) are on your own. You must plan and execute your dive with your dive buddy only. Once members arrive at the meeting spot, the Organizer becomes simply another diver.

Your participation constitutes your affirmation you agree to these above rules and disclaimers.... and that your buddy(s) (if applicable) has read and agrees to the same.

UPDATE: I've put a spreadsheet with all assignments, transport locations, and other details at More--> Files--> Two Harbors APRIL 2013 MASTER LIST. Give it a hard look. Let me know if you have any concerns with how I've arranged things. Thanks, gang.

Hey guys. I loaned out some gear during the Two Harbors trip that I don't think was returned to me. Did anyone end up with the following?

    Tusa Panthes mask (black)
XS Scuba weights (personal marker: 3 orange dots in a line)
XS Scuba ankle weights (1.5 lbs)

Great weekend!! Hornys, Nudis and more....and I'm not talking about Danny's exposed backside or the other "extracurricular" activities. Go to the following link if you want to check out a 7 minute dive highlights video:

Please check out the photo thread in the discussion forum.
In addition to uploading them here to the respective event page post in there if you can. No one was everywhere at once and with 13 different 'events' going on over the weekend it's a great place to share if host them elsewhere as well. http://www.meetup.com/Scuba-Diving-San-Diego/messages/boards/thread/33991252/0/#[masked]

Also need three volunteers, like last year, to bring drip coffee makers. Can anyone help?

    April 24, 2013

    • Bill P.

Yes, Avery. Please bring it. Also, tell me what kind of coffee I need to bring. I don't drink it, so know very little about the different kinds and brands.

      April 25, 2013

    • Avery C.

No filter is needed and you just need pre-ground coffee. Google search says that 3 pounds of coffee makes about 100 cups but don't hold me to that. Make sure it's not instant and that it is pre-ground or we will all be mashing beans with our tanks. You can get Vons brand (safeway select) in bags that I think are about 16 ounces each. Also need cups, sugar, some spoons and I would recommend powdered creamer for ease.

Bill, I have a very large 42 cup coffee maker I can bring. Let me know if you still need it.

Cabin People: When the Cee Ray comes into Two Harbors for docking Friday afternoon it will turn right around and make a 1-tank dive somewhere in the area. Boat spots are wide open. You would simply get off the Pac Star, pile your stuff for the cabins onto the ranger truck (for transport to the cabins quad), then get onto the Cee Ray with your scuba gear when it comes to the dock. Got see the dedicated event page and sign up!

Last minute I know, but looking like we can't make the party - before relinquishing I wanted to put it out there......anyone want to buy my 2 spots in cabin - I didn't request linens, did have 2 steak dinners reserved, 1 tank dive on friday, and 2 persons reserved for Pacific Star on Saturday. Any takers before I post individually?

    April 23, 2013

Cabin People, is there anyone who IS NOT bringing a tank? Let me know so that I don't put you on the Cee Ray for a dive.

    April 22, 2013

    • Bill P.

Avery: I would bring my own weights. There'll be a lot of us and the dive shop on the pier only has so many. There is both a deli/burger place AND a convenience store... literally within steps of each other. A person could VERY easily get away w bringing no food on this trip. As a matter of fact, we encourage people to support the deli, convenience store, and restaurant in town. It'll make the Island Company more inclined to cut us deals in the future.

      April 22, 2013

    • Jennifer

I will bring my own weights but I don't have tanks. Please don't put me on the Cee Ray for any dives. Thanks, Jennifer

Folks, the spreadsheet detailing your mainland transport method, your boat dive assignment, and your linens status is now up at More--> Files--> Two Harbors APRIL 2013 MASTER LIST. Give your row a good look and let me know if there are any problems.

    April 22, 2013

  • Bill P.

Folks, sorry for the delay. Spreadsheet will be posted this weekend without fail. Good rule of thumb: Most, if not all, cabin people will be transiting to two harbors aboard the Pacific Star out of San Pedro. (Boards at 10 am.) Confirm this by looking at the spreadsheet when I post it this weekend. Thanks! Also, if you want linens (vs bringing your own or a sleeping bag) make sure you sign up on the dedicated event page (linked-to above).

    Hi Bill,

Sorry if I missed it in the write up but is there a refridgerator in the mess hall or communal dining area...I know you mentioned to bring a cooler but for meats and fruits its nice to be able to put those items in a fridge.

Also do you know what size/type tank the dive shop rents?

    thanks,

    April 22, 2013
