Solid Divers Needed! Experience A Must.

To all strong/experienced divers who read this: Will you help us give back for two or three hours? Can you be a good buddy to someone?

UPDATE- Normal things to go over with your buddy before the dive:

  • Signals and communication underwater
  • Proper gas (air) management (turnaround time, safety margins, etc)
  • Proper Weighting
  • Emphasis on neutral buoyancy
  • Lost buddy procedures

STARBUCKS is providing the coffee! Thanks, Seattle's best!

Experienced divers only RSVP on this page. You do not need to be a Power Scuba member to participate in this event. (If you are not, contact me to be placed on the list.)

I was helped by several divers when I was brand new to scuba. They answered my questions, went diving with me, and were patient as hell! Perhaps you experienced that also when you were new. Let's do that very same thing for some of the new or inexperienced divers in this group. You'll take them out on one dive at the Shores and help them along on their path to "veteran" status!

Will you help me give back? (For obvious reasons this is a definite "no flake" event.)

WHAT: One tank dive with an inexperienced diver as a buddy.

WHY: Because it's greatly needed

ARRIVALTIME: Please be at our canopy NO LATER THAN 8:30 am. (I'll be there at least by 7:30 am.) I'll begin my indoc speech then.

PAIRING UP TIME: We'll begin buddying up around 9:30 am

IN-WATER TIME: Approximately 10 am

WHAT IF: Q- What if it becomes painfully obvious your dive buddy does not have the skills necessary to complete the dive? In other words, they're not simply rusty, they're missing a significant amount of the skillset and knowledge to safely perform a dive.  A- You must be candid, honest, and gentle with your buddy. Tell them, in your estimation, they're not ready to perform a dive and suggest they take a refresher class or repeat their o/w class. Let the host know of this as well. (Addendum- If you are already in the water and the realization strikes you that your buddy shouldn't be diving, end the dive immediately and have the above conversation.)

Major thanks to the following scuba shops/instructors for contributing at least one of their staff to our little endeavor here:

  • Dive Shack (El Cajon)
  • Ocean Enterprises (Kearny Mesa)
  • Unified Team Diving (Sorrento Valley)

This will not be a "Scuba Review Class" or anything similar... just one diver (you) buddying up with another certified (albeit less-experienced) diver. No teaching relationship, real or implied, is existant.

BAR-B-Q after the dive! Power Scuba will spring for some meat. You bring a side (maybe a little to share too?) and something to drink.

THIS IS A NO FLAKE EVENT

ADMIN STUFF YOU MUST READ:

If you have not submitted a Liability Release for Power Scuba, please follow this link to the file, print, sign, and bring to the event along with your C-Card (scuba certification card). It's ok if we have a few more Vets than Newbies. That still works. Please, all of you come on by and support us! We'll have some food for ya!

      April 11, 2013

  • Bill P.

Could I ask that all of you ask another experienced diver that you know to join us as well. Right now we have ten more Newbies than experienced divers to pair with. I most definitely don't want to send any newbies away buddy-less from this event. Please help, gang.

Well, for just this event, I have to share I'm not really concerned about "intermediates". This event is for those who are brand new or "inexperienced" (whatever you deem that to be). You Vets are simply divers who are solid in your skills (no matter what level you are at), have a decent amount of experience, and can be a good buddy to someone. It's my own personal opinion that if you don't fall into the "new/inexperienced" category you should fall into the "solid skills w/ some experience" category pretty soon after leaving the "newbie" category. Let's not muddy the waters talking about intermediates.

      April 10, 2013

    • Bill P.

*And let's be truly honest here: Even a brand new diver should have solid skills and be capable of being a good buddy to someone. That's what the o/w cert is sayin'. The fact that isn't always the case is a concern to a great many of us, I know. Let's all do our part to help these valued members (the newbies) find their path in our scuba community.

I will have 2 tanks along and would be happy to do 2 dives. (BTW, I don't refer to myself as a "solid" diver, just a "properly insulated" one.) ;-)
