Sea Stories at the Explorers Club

Join TSSC at our annual journey to the Explorer's Club in NYC for a day filled with stories of underwater adventure!

Program includes.....

▪ Charlie Buffum and Craig Harger –
“The Wreck of Oliver Hazard Perry’s USS Revenge.”

Messrs. Buffum and Harger found the remains of the 1811 wreck of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s first command, USS Revenge, off the coast of Rhode Island. They continue to work with the US Navy History and Heritage Command on the site’s mapping and excavation process.

Mr. Buffum is the founder of Cottrell Brewing Company and Mr. Harger is a retired industrial gas specialist.

▪ Joe Mazraani and Bradley Sheard
“Searching and Exploring the U-550.”

After researching for nearly two decades, the final resting place of the U-550 was discovered near the end of a grueling round-the-clock side scan operation. The World War II U-boat is located in approximately 100 meters of North Atlantic water off the coast of Massachusetts about 70 miles south of Nantucket Island.

A criminal defense attorney by trade, Mr. Mazraani is also a U.S.C.G. licensed captain. An aerospace engineer by trade, Mr. Sheard has been diving and photographing shipwrecks for more than 30 years with a special interest in World War II wrecks.

▪ Tim Shank –
“Life in Deep-ocean Trenches:
Entering a New Era of Scientific Research.”

Dr. Shank is a deep-sea biologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He explores the ecological and evolutionary biodiversity of deep-sea life and is leading an international program in the ocean’s deepest trenches to conduct the first systematic studies of trench ecosystems. Dr. Shank served as a science advisor to Jim Cameron as he prepared for his Mariana Trench expedition in 2012.

▪ Edith Widder –
“The Kraken Revealed: The Story Behind Finding the Giant Squid.”

Explore the mysterious world beyond the reach of sunlight in the deep sea where giants dwell. Dr. Widder is a MacArthur Fellow, deep-sea explorer, oceanographer, marine biologist, and co-founder of the Ocean Research and Conservation Association.

She has made hundreds of deep-sea submersible dives into the dark ocean and was the first to capture video recordings of bioluminescent animals and the first to film the giant squid in its natural habitat. She has been featured in BBC, PBS, Discovery Channel and National Geographic television productions.
