A Lantau Island exploration

So Lantau Island is back on. This time we are going to head south along the coastline to Chi Ma Wan Peninsula and many wilderness beaches. We will be stopping at Shap Long to do some village exploring, stretch our legs and have lunch. There will be an easterly swell so we might even be able to do some surfing in the kayaks.

Our return journey takes us around Hei Ling Chau and Sunshine Island (with its abandoned hippy commune from the 1970's.

We then finish our day having dinner and a chilled wine or cold beer at the China Bear (next to the Moi Wo ferry terminal) to thank them for taking care of all our gear (bring some money). We will probably head to the Turkish for some live music afterwards before hiking into the mountains (15 mins) or heading back to central.

There is an overnight option for anyone who wants to stay Lantau. We have been given a house at Ark Eden to sleep in. All you need to bring is a sleeping bag and peace of mind. This is a beautiful remote place and will bring peace to your soul.

Make sure if you are staying the night you let us know.

Great to view the environment around Lantau from the water and good experience crossing ferry lanes. Sitting on my chair right now, I can still feel the waves. Thanks Dave and all who helped make it happen.

Dave, again, I am very sorry for having to cancel the participation last minute, and thank you for understanding. I sent email to each of the 3 people on the waiting list. I hope one of them can make it last minute. The weather seems to be pretty good. Wish everyone awesome time.

Will we be able to change our clothes at China Bear or some other place after paddling?

    March 30, 2013

  • Dave W.

regarding the weather, we will be able to avoid most problem things such as thunderstorms etc.
The wind will be our biggest issue as always so this will be a good test of skills for those who can paddle. As always, we will stick to the safe areas with beginners which means our exploration will also include some training. Bring a sprayjacket (rainjacket) to wera when in the kayak to keep the wind and water off.

My friend is a beginner and is very interested in joining, would she be able to sign up too?

    March 27, 2013

IMHO, if s/he hasn't learned how to paddle properly for long distance or how to save herself when capsized, then she should do Part A and Part B training courses before joining the excursions for everyone's safety and enjoyment.

Also, she is not a member of the seakayak meetup so she cannot come along. Again, thanks Q

Hi, I am totally beginner, but would like to try but wonder does it need me physically very strong or good swimming skill? Thanks

    March 27, 2013

    • Aileen

From my experience of participating in their trips, being a beginner is ok and you only have to be reasonably fit. However, if you haven't learned how to paddle properly for long distance or how to save yourself when capsized, then you should do Part A and Part B training courses before you join the excursions for everyone's safety and enjoyment.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
