Another Lantau Island sea kayak trip, this time its more a skills development trip (less distance, more personalised instruction) and helping develop the Ark Eden Environmental Education Campsite (charity).
For all you paddlers who haven't explored the meetup website, our Mission & Objectives are on http://www.meetup.com/Sea-kayakers-friends/pages/Mission_and_Objectives/. This trip is designed to meet our conservation, skills development objectives and having fun!
In the morning we will arrive at Mui Wo ferry pier after travelling on the 9:40 fast ferry from Central to Lantau Island (Pier 6). Our meeting place is at the ferry pier itself. Wait in the shade until we all arrive.
What will happen?
We take a short hike to Silvermine Beach where we have our kayaks stored. Its our objective to be in the water by 10:30. Bring a water proof bag for your clothes as we will be taking everything in our kayaks! (15 litres maximum size so it fits in the kayak). If you do not have one of these we can buy one for you. They are always handy so do not think its a burden).
We change at the beach before heading out to Chi Ma Wan beach, approximately 4.5 kms away. Our round trip journey will take us about 4 hours concentrating on developing your kayak techniques, kayak control and beach landings. We will be having lunch at Shap Long so bring a cut lunch or buy some noodles from the local store (bring money to support the locals).
On arrival back at Mui Wo (around 2:30pm) we quickly change into our work gear and head into the jungle (about a 20 minute hike). This time we will be doing our bit to support environmental education.
Ark Eden is deep in a hidden valley behind Mui Wo. It is a centre for learning abut sustainability, something that is in keeping with our ethics at Sea Kayakers and Friends. We will be attempting to clear the under growth off of an ancient rice terrace to establish a camp site for our friends at Ark Eden (see www.arkedenlantau.com).
A couple of hours work will go a long way for making it possible for people to camp there and help this local charity. We will be having a vegetarian BBQ and some cold refreshments (beer / wine) before we leave for the ferry at around 6:10pm arriving back in central before 7pm.
What to expect.
A very satisfying day for giving and receiving. Your skills will be honed under the guidance of a professional sea kayak instructor and your well being will be enhanced through helping a local cause.
You should also have a great time and get a little bit fitter as well.
Who can attend this meetup?
Only people who have attended a Part A training course. This trip will compliment any skills that have been learned previously. If you are an absolute beginner, please attend a Part A course first.
As with all our sea kayak trips, if you RSVP yes and then do not attend without giving ample notice you will be immediately removed from the group.
