Beginner Sea Kayak Level 1 - Part A - Lantau Island

Another beginner training day for all those needing their personal and group rescue skills, paddling technique skills and weather / navigation skills. The Part B will follow in 2 weeks time.

This Beginner Sea Kayak Level 1 - Part A will teach you the necessary skills to be able to come sea kayaking without endangering yourself or any other paddlers in the group.

About the course:

The Beginners Level 1 (Part A & B) course is designed to take a person from absolute beginner to being able to confidently paddle a sea kayak in easy conditions, prepare for a sea kayak trip, how to land and take off safely from a beach and how to handle yourself in case of a capsize.

Our time will be spent under instruction in the shade or in the sea kayak.

You will learn how to sit correctly, understanding the principles of correct paddling techniques, be able to efficiently paddle the kayak forwards, backwards, turn using 2 different paddle strokes and stop the kayak in a single and a double kayak.

The student will be able to do a safe wet exit and know how to swim the kayak safely to shore, understand the use and care of essential equipment including the parts of the sea kayak.

As sea kayaking is a group sport until the paddler is extremely capable, understanding communications systems, decision making, rafting up, group rescues and assisted rescue will also be learned, although recognising that these are only useful when kayaking with other trained paddlers.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the programme you will have the basic skills necessary to be able to paddle a sea kayak in sheltered waters, with a knowledge of the 5 basic paddle strokes, an understanding of the design and use of sea kayaks, practical knowledge of how to do basic self rescue and beach entries and exits.

You will also have had a short sea kayak trip to provide a practical assessment of your paddling abilities.

You will have learned the following:

  • forward and back paddle
  • sweep stroke
  • stern rudder
  • how to control your kayak
  • how to enter and exit the water from a beach,
  • from deep water,
  • from a pier or landing,
  • from a rocky shore.
  • the very basics of how to handle a kayak in small surf.
  • what to do when you capsize in shallow water (surf),
  • in deep water
  • how to swim with your kayak
  • how to empty your kayak after capsize and return to shore
  • how to communicate at sea with other kayakers
  • basic weather forecasting
  • basic trip planning

This is Part A of the minimum requirement for people who wish to join our sea kayak trips on Sundays throughout the year unless you are already a capable paddler.

I have a very simple rule for every trip.
If you do not turn up after you have RSVP'd YES, you will be instantly banned from the group.

This is to allow people on the waiting list to plan their weekend. RSVP's cannot be changed after 9pm on Friday evening.

No exceptions, no excuses.

Take the 9:40am ferry from Central (Pier 6). It will arrive at Moi Wo at 10:10.

Had a great experience and learnt a lot in one day! Looking forward to part B. Thanks Gareth for the training and being patient with us randomly throwing ourselves out of our kayaks. And thanks to the Lim's for the pics.

Hi Ying, part of the course involves getting out of an upside down kayak. The pfd ( personal flotation device ) will help you float, but if you are seriously afraid of the water this might not be the course for you.
