Beginner Sea Kayak Level 1 - Part A

Hong Kong is an amazing destination for seakayaking. We have over 200 islands, incredible coastlines including sea caves, blow holes, deserted beaches and much more. However it can also be treacherous so to paddle on our Sunday sea kayak journeys you need to be able to control your kayak and know what to do in the event of a capsize.

This Beginner Sea Kayak Level 1 - Part A (Part B 2 weeks later) will teach you the necessary skills to be able to come sea kayaking without endangering yourself or any other paddlers in the group.

Please Note: This is a commercial sea kayaking course run by our sponsors Surf Hong Kong. As members of this meetup group we get a 50% discount (type in MEETUP2 in the Promotional Code field).

About the course:

The Beginners Level 1 (Part A & B) course is designed to take a person from absolute beginner to being able to confidently paddle a sea kayak in easy conditions, prepare for a sea kayak trip, how to land and take off safely from a beach and how to handle yourself in case of a capsize.

90% of our time will be spent under instruction either in the classroom at Sai Wan (about 10%), or in the sea kayak at Sai Wan (90%). It is conducted over 2 Saturdays on separate weekends. The second weekend will be a refresher of the previous week, practice with a short sea kayak trip to assess the students paddling ability.

The student will learn how to sit correctly, understanding the principles of correct paddling techniques. He / she will be able to efficiently paddle the kayak forwards, backwards, turn using 2 different paddle strokes and stop the kayak in a single and a double kayak.

The student will be able to do a safe wet exit and know how to swim the kayak safely to shore, understand the use and care of essential equipment including the parts of the sea kayak.

As sea kayaking is a group sport until the paddler is extremely capable, understanding communications systems, decision making, rafting up, group rescues and assisted rescue will also be learned, although recognising that these are only useful when kayaking with other trained paddlers.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the programme you will have the basic skills necessary to be able to paddle a sea kayak in sheltered waters, with a knowledge of the 5 basic paddle strokes, an understanding of the design and use of sea kayaks, practical knowledge of how to do basic self rescue and beach entries and exits.

You will also have had a short sea kayak trip to provide a practical assessment of your paddling abilities.

You will have learned the following:

  • forward and back paddle
  • sweep stroke
  • stern rudder
  • low brace
  • how to control your kayak
  • how to enter and exit the water from a beach,
  • from deep water,

My suggestion is to get to the beach between 10 and 10:30 so that you have time to get changed etc so we can start at 10:30. It takes about 1 hour from Sai Kung so if you depart Sai Kung before 9:30 you should be OK.
