SKEG
SEA KAYAK ENTHUSIAST GROUP
This group exists to paddle, explore and learn about the sea. If found on dry land please put us back in the water. Our interests range from paddling oceans, bays, flat water, springs, and rivers, to camping and expeditions to kayak surfing and playing in the rocks. We like to learn and share paddling skills (Greenland and Euro) and promote safe sea kayaking through education, leadership and instruction. We enjoy socializing at restaurants after the paddle. We paddle, practice our skills, paddle more, challenge each others skills, paddle some more and then finish our day eating and laughing.
We are a group of safe, experienced and active paddlers who enjoy paddling sea kayaks and having fun. However, we do so safely. We follow the guidelines of the ACA and BCU. Members wear a properly fitting USCG approved life jacket (PFD’s) and have a whistle while on or near the water. Members carry required and optional safety gear. Member sea kayaks must have fore and aft bulkheads or airbags and all other required USCG equipment. Some paddles require intermediate to advanced sea kayaking skills. We do not paddle with alcohol or pets.
A sea kayak or touring kayak is a kayak developed for the sport of paddling on open waters of lakes, bays, and the ocean. Sea kayaks are seaworthy small boats with a covered deck and the ability to incorporate a spraydeck. Sea kayaks have higher cruising speed, cargo capacity, ease of straight-line paddling, and comfort for long journeys than white water kayaks. The length of a sea kayak generally ranges between 14–18 feet for solo craft, and up to 26 feet for tandem craft. Kayak width may be as little as 19", and as wide as 36". 16' long sea kayaks are the suggested minimum for SKEG members.
SKEG members are passionate about enhancing their paddling and water safety skills. We challenge ourselves to be better, safer paddlers. We offer skill and safety classes for new kayakers with the desire to learn sea kayaking. Some classes are free of charge. At times, we invite various kayaking coaches and water safety instructors to teach classes. These classes may involve a fee for the coach.
If you are passionate about paddling sea kayaks, if you are passionate about enhancing your paddling and water safety skills, please join us for an introductory paddle. Get to know us and how we paddle. You must be 21 years of age to join.
Note: SKEG does not have board members or officers, but does have volunteers who set up paddle dates and locations. We work as a committee. It's about being on the water not being in the boardroom.
