Waitlist only: The NYFA Fashion Show (Two Shows)

  • April 13, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is NYFA's 9th annual Runway Fashion Show. There are two performances 7pm and 9pm with limited photographer slots for each. This meetup event covers both events but each photographer will only shoot one of the two performances and optionally stay to observe (or shoot from a non-photographer location) the other due to the limited photographer spots.

A number of images are posted here: http://www.meetup.com/SeaPhoto/photos/1341416/

Our group has enjoyed shooting this the last several years, and had a great time at each. Signup is by waitlist only, and it is always oversubscribed, read below for details. In your RSVP please specify which event you prefer to shoot (late versus early) and it doesn't hurt to make a case for why you would like to shoot this event.

With events such as these we are faced with balancing previous experience against our desire to expose our less experienced members to new areas of interest. At each show we need to have one or two highly experienced photographers, but open remaining slots to those with moderate experience with passion to expand their skills since these are the photographers who will benefit the most from the experience. There is only space for 4 photographers at each show, so unfortunately we can't open this up to more people.  Signup is by waitlist only, with selection based on contribution to the group such as assistant organizers, supporters, and those who have sent in ideas or suggested meetups, and previous participation especially if you posted some images, and fit, and expressed passion for this event.

Those attending one show but not the other will be allowed to stay to view the other show, but will not be allowed to shoot from the photographer areas/platforms during their "non-shooting" show. Please don't even ask if one of the other photographers will let you stand next to them, it sabotages their pictures due to lack of eye contact.

If you would like to shoot video, contact me asap as I may have one slot available for this.

Is there any way to watch a video?

Michael you were correct about using the 85mm in that corner. it was not good for full body looks, so i intially kept cutting the model's heads off to get the clothing, but for upper body portrait shots it was fantastic. Again had a great time. jeff

thanks michael. i thought the designs were much stronger than last year, but the models did not stop and pose long enough. it was still great, fun and a wonderful event. jeff

      Cool! I'll be there :) 7PM, right?

I will get there at about 6:30 or just before. The main thing to be aware of is that parking can be difficult to find and eat up time. The other thing to know is that this show actually starts exactly on time at 7:00 PM.

Jeff, you could throw the 85 on the 5dII and get some real portfolio pieces, and shoot the rest with the 60D with 24-70mm. Or put the[masked] on the 5DII and shoot the majority of your images with this single setup. Tough call in that case what to put on the 60D...(85mm vs. 24-70)

    April 5, 2013

    • Jeff L.

I agree. I will have flashes on both cameras. should be great fun.

great suggestions mike. all really helped me last year especially the color correction patch. Glazers has them in a special package in multi colors. i also used all 3 Canon lens 24-70,[masked] and my favorite 85 f1.4. these were on my Canon 60D. this year i will shoot both 60D and my full frame 5DII. my images from last year are similar to your group but i must admit i loved the images with my 85. it did well with shooting the individual models, but i had to switch to the other 2 when the parade of models occurred. i used my flash 380 on the camera, but intend to try my 580 on an L unit which holds the flash separate. Note: the L unit does not work well with either a tripod or the monopod. hope this helps some of the shooters this year. jeff

There are opportunities for wider or longer lenses but I would go with the[masked]mm if you are full frame. The 85 f1.4 is a fantastic lens and you could do great work with it, however you will probably find you lose a lot of images to focus if you shoot anywhere near f1.4, and you do lose some flexibility without zoom. A 24-70mm is another good option if you shoot from one of the close location or have a 1.6 crop camera.

You will want to carefully manage flash power usage. I use a power pack to increase cycle speed, but you can overheat the flash if not paying attention to how much power you are using.

Just my $0.25, other methods will work also.

I will be shooting with[masked]mm full frame and find this to be ideal for my shooting location and style. I typically shoot these 1/200 f3.2 and always with color-corrected flash to amber. There is plenty of light, but the light can be a pit “patchy” or in the worst case could be shining at you. The flash also assists with autofocus and fills shadows. I set the exposure manually based on highlights, and leave the flash auto to correct for lighting changes and distance. I manually dial in flash exposure comp based on the outfit as the models approach since white and black outfits affect the flash auto exposure quite a bit. (typical range -3 to 0)

A[masked]mm f4 would also work fine, especially depending on how accurate your autofocus is and your skills assisting the autofocus.

If you are shooting from close up you can use a diffuser, if further back you will just fire the flash straight ahead with no diffuser and fill shadows.

You will most likely be 3-5 meters from the stage, but there are several different shooting locations and the stage has lots of different parts for each person to cover.

Tripods are allowed but can be difficult to manage. A monopod is ideal. Flash is allowed and is very helpful to fill patchiness of the light. There is plenty of light, but it can be quite patchy or you might have to shoot into a light. (How fun!) 50mm or[masked]mm full frame is an ideal range.

A few quick questions- I assume flashes & tripods are allowed? If no go on tripods (space constraints, etc) how about a monopod? Also about how long is the runway and how far away should we expect to be?

Kids are not disallowed from the event, but as a shooter you would need all your focus on the event.
