Foundations of Composition - Class #2

This is a beginners series on the Fundamentals of Composition, Class #2.

We will watch several videos by Ben Long, lasting between 20-40 minutes.

There are 6 more classes that will build upon each other. If you can not attend all you can go to Lynda.com and follow along there.

In this class, you will learn

I'll expand on this later. In the meantime, RSVP!

Attendance

!!!Priority will be given to those in the prior class!!! Please get on the waiting list and I will place those from the previous class in first. Believe me, this is a bigger pain for me than for you.

This is a highly sought after class and we had many no shows. I'm expanding the group to 30, but if we continue to have no shows I'll have to charge a nominal fee for attendance in order to allow everyone in who wants to attend.

This weeks assignment

Use the rules we learned in class 1,
- Clear subject and background
- Simplicity
- Balance

Upload photos to http://www.flickr.com/groups/mtsphotoclass/ and tag class#1. We will review these starting when the first few people arrive!

What to bring

Bring your camera, pen and paper, snacks, drinks. You will be LEARNING a lot of rules and techniques and will want to study this information until it is second nature. When you get into a photographic situation where you can't find the shot or are overwhelmed, you will be able to fall back to these learning and walk away with a great shot.

Camera

You can use any type of camera. Composition is about lining up your subject in the viewfinder, however this class is best served by those with a camera that can control depth of field and shutter speed. Also if you have a telephoto or multiple lenses.

Prerequisites:

It is not necessary but you should familiarize yourself with:

Over and underexposure

Depth of field

Camera position

Focal length

Motion stopping

Speed of a lens

The functionality of your camera’s features and button layout.

Parking

There is plenty of free parking but arrive early.

Special thanks to Colleen Kelly who is providing the space at Bandia Rua Studios to host this meetup. If you need studio rental time, talk to Colleen.

Cheers,

Michael

I was so happy to get off the wait list, but I won't be done with my work in time after all. Ugh. Sorry for the late cancellation.

MICHAEL, Can you please provide the link to the Lynda.com class?

Attendees, if you've figured out you can't make it, please bail now so others can attend. Thanks.

If anyone has a problem finding the studio call my cell at (650)[masked] and I will give directions. Parking is available in the covered area in front of the building, on the street, or in the free city lot just south of the studio building.

If you haven't already, get out there and utilize what you learned in the first class. You don't have to go to the same park, just walk out your front door!

Come to class with a list of places you think would be good for us to target in the next lesson.

Darn! I was told that this was when the class would be AFTER I arranged a meet-up with another group. We will be shooting down at Gas Works Park from about 7:30 to 10 or later if anyone wants to join us for some night shooting! The weather promises to be wonderful. We may even get some light painting going on! Hope to see some of you there after class. :)
