Introduction to Studio Lighting:

Studio lighting can be mysterious and intimidating to new and experienced photographers alike. This introductory crash course will shed some light on the subject and give you the confidence to start working in the studio right away. I will provide you with an essential understanding of lighting sources, modifiers, metering, and practical applications for every-day projects. You will leave the studio armed with the knowledge you need to create consistent, predictable results you and your clients can count on.

Class style is hands-on and conversational. We will start with some theory relating to light and lighting tools and then move into hands-on practice shooting tethered for immediate feedback. If you have a question during the class, bring it up and we'll move in that direction... every class is unique, depending on the students.

Topics covered will include:

hot lights vs strobes
mono lights vs speed lights
metering in the studio
white balance in the studio
basic portrait set up
essential modifiers (softbox, umbrella, reflector, etc.)
key light
fill light
hair light

This class serves as a foundation of lighting information for future workshops. Package this class with Portraiture 101 and Hands-On Portrait Masterclass for %10 off!

I look forward to seeing you in class!

Read what others have said about my workshops:

? This was a great introduction to studio lighting. But, really it's all due to Neil. He is a gifted instructor, knowledgeable, personable, and passionate about his craft. The session was hands on and paced to the participants. He made it look and feel easy to get outstanding results. I am looking forward to the next one! ? --Risa

? Tons of hands on experience. Neil was full of information and handled "off the wall" questions very well. The class seemed to flow to what interested us most. There were several different experience levels in the room and he catered to all of them well. ? --Thobert

? I enjoyed this experiential workshop and learned many useful techniques. The participants were able to experiment with many lighting combinations. A tethered shooting system provided immediate feedback. Neil's questions provoked me to think deeper about lighting and when participants' answers didn't expose things completely, Neil supplemented those answers to complete the exposure. It was fun working with the other participants. I felt like I was part of a team that was learning new things. The workshop provided some theory but focused on technique. That focus was just right for me. ? --Steven

? I highly recommend Neil's classes. He is a great teacher: patient, knowledgeable and gives hands-on experience. His small class sizes allow for a discussion-style teaching and caters to each individual's wants and needs. In the three plus hours, Neil gave us a wealth of knowledge, tips and ideas. This is well-worth the money. ? --Angela

? The organizer had great insight and was very open with his experiences and knowledge. He provided both the technical and real-world training as it related to lighting. He was open to any questions we asked. He also made sure everyone kept up. It was a great experience, and I am looking forward to his next training sessions. ? --Huzefam

? Neil's workshop was more than I expected! He created an open learning environment and had all the professional equipment for us to work with. Neil did a great job answering questions and encouraging participation. He was very knowledgeable with all types of photography and techniques. I highly recommended his workshops and am looking forward to part 2! ? --Erika

? Got exactly what I was looking for out of the session. Neil was great at adapting to the level of the attendees, and was able to modify contents accordingly. Thanks Neil ! ? --Rob
