Seacoast Skill Sharing is all about building community self-reliance and is based on the simple idea that we can teach and learn from each other. It’s about getting together to experience the wealth of local knowledge; to learn how to do, make, and repair. Over the coming months, Seacoast Skill Sharing will host a series of workshops featuring the skills of….. YOU! So, what is something that you would like to learn? to share with others?
Some possible ideas for workshops include:
• Organic Gardening
• Raising chickens
• Canning/Preserving foods
• Sewing and clothing repair
• Bike repair
• The possibilities are endless!
To start, two gardening workshops will take place in March and April 2012(details coming soon). Stay tuned!
Why Do It? Because it's fun! And.....
During the past several decades, we’ve become increasingly dependent on a global, fossil fuel-based economy that makes us ever more vulnerable to declines in supply. Without significant reductions in the burning of fossil fuels, climate change projections indicate that New England will experience hotter drier summers, warmer and wetter winters, and significant changes in ecosystem functions and services during this century. The challenge facing us now is to factor expected resource shortages and changes in climate into our way of life.
Now for the Good News! As neighbors, we have the power to bring the focus back to our local resources and people to build a stronger local economy, a more self-reliant community, and in process reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Self-reliance means meeting a community’s own needs using local resources and talents.
