After the success of last fall's Ying & Yang show with Main Street Art (where we'll have our second annual fall exhibit in September), and because Chris Keeley said we had to, we're having our second art show for members of the Seacoast Photographers Group. This spring show is [tentatively] titled:
Abstraction: Abstracts and Extracts through the Lens
An abstract photography exhibit by local seacoast photographers.
The opening reception will be Saturday, April 6th, 2013 and will run through the closing party on Sunday, May 5th, 2013.
Who Can Participate:
The show is open to any photographer who is a member of the Seacoast Photographer's Association. That's this Meetup group - if you're a member of this group, you may participate. If you're not a member, sign up before the Call to Entry Submission Date.
Submissions:
Head over to PhotoMeets.com. If you have an account, please login. If not, take 30 seconds to create an account. On the console page you'll see when you login, you'll now see a section on this show. Follow the simple instructions to add your photos and join the show.
There is a $15 entry fee via credit card to cover the minor costs of the show. Any and all proceeds after costs will benefit the Seacoast Artists Association Scholarship Fund.
Images should represent your interpretation of "abstract" subject matter or results.
All entries will be judged for suitability by an independent panel of judges. Submissions that do not meet the guidelines (e.g. not a photograph, or includes something considered vulgar or inappropriate for public display, etc.) will be rejected by the judges. In the case that there are more submissions than space, the judges may reject pieces at their sole discretion. Every artist submitting on time is guaranteed that at least one work will be in the exhibit, assuming that the work adheres to all the guidelines related to subject, media, and framing. The decision of the judges is final.
All applicants will be notified of the judges' decisions via email by Wednesday, March 20th (three days after the submission deadline.
Hanging Requirements:
All works must be framed and wired for hanging. Mats should be cleanly cut, frames should be fully intact and unmarred, glass should be thoroughly cleaned, and a wire for hanging should be attached. Sawtooth hangers or other methods of hanging are not acceptable.
Drop-Off of Accepted Works:
Drop off will be Friday, April 5th, from 4-6PM, at the Town Hall Gallery.
Pick-Up and Closing Party:
The final day of the exhibit will be Sunday, May 5th. We plan on a closing celebratory party from Noon until 4PM, and you can pick up your works then.
Exhibit:
The opening reception is set for Saturday, April 6th from Noon-5PM. Invite your friends, family, and colleagues. Get your Facebook mojo on!
During the five-week photography exhibit, the gallery will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from Noon to 4PM. We'll have Saturday ArtTalks on various topics of interest running from 12:30-1:30PM.
I was at the Newmarket mills last night and was so impressed how you have magically created a fabulous art show literally overnight. What a wonderful expression of each one working together for the benefit of the whole. Whoever was able just dropped everything and rallied to the cause with all their hearts and resources. WOW. May the Force be with us!
(Nothing can stop or even hinder a right idea from completion with this group)
The opening last week was filled with great expectation of a few weeks of sharing many wonderful examples of great photography thanks to the generosity of the Exeter Town Hall Gallery. Little did we know that this show was going 'on the road'
This temporary new location will bring new opportunities to share with another area and the 'giving back' Saturday meet ups will be able to continue.
Thank you all - there is indeed much good in the world

Hi Susan! Be careful and watch the ratio of your image if you plan to use MPIX for prints. I tried them once and found out that if your image isn't sized EXACTLY right for the paper size you order, they'll just automatically center the image so that it covers the whole paper, "bleeding" it to spill over the edges. Consequently, the edges get cut off. I had presumed that they would fit the WHOLE image onto the paper, leaving white space on the edges. Of course you'd then have to have the print framed professionally to fit your odd format but at least you'd have the whole image. So don't give them any square formats. They don't do custom work. They'll just automatically center everything to fit the paper and you'll end up with an odd composition. Since there's no square printing paper, a smart printer would print the whole image and you would simply cut off the blank areas. I think MPIX has some kind of "print preview" so take a look at that first before you order anything.

I just love the enthusiasm of the group. The exhibit was testimony of that. Being an opportunist that I am, it gave me an opportunity to pick everyone's brain.

Just to say a BIG thank you to all the committee who arranged, hung and created the exhibition.

Wonderful show with strong entries and many delightful abstracts. Thanks to everyone who attended the opening, and the enthusiasm of the many who came before the show even got started. Gratitude to the many fine photographers that are participating, and the hard-working committee that put so much time into making this a success.

Re the opening of the Abstract Show at the Town Hall--the photographs are professional quality, with many fascinating and intriguing abstracts, the wine was very nice, the munchies (dips, spreads, cookies, fudge) were also well-received (and thanks to those who were responsible for providing them) and I'm sure that the "outsiders" who attended had a good impression of the group. The only thing missing, maybe, was some nice soft background music? We can spread the word without hesitation that the show is worth seeing. -- Jackie

Not sure if my images match the exact dimensions I gave when I did my original submission (but they are close). The dimensions aren't printed on the tags, are they? And if they are who should I send my updated dimensions to. There's no place on the PhotoMeets website to update this. Thanks!

I am looking forward to meeting other like minded photogtraphers. I am delighted to find such a group so close!

Howdy- Someone at the meeting suggested MPix for printing. I'm checking it out for kicks and ran into a problem. It uploads the title of the photo, but it says "thumbnail generation in progress" and never actually uploads the image. I can't remember who suggested this site, but was hoping he might see this comment and let me know if he's ever had any trouble. I'll probably use Photosmith in Dover because he is always so helpful and I like to keep it local, but I thought I'd pose this question in case I want to use MPix in the future. Thank you!

I have used Mpix with out a problem. I have also used Richmond Camera on line. The turnaround is not quite as quick as Mpix, but the results are excellent prices very good and shipping the same as Mpix. You can talk to the lab by phone. Having several prints made at once spreads the shipping costs.

ATTENTION: Michael's is having a frame sale that ends today. Some are 50% off and others 40%.

Perhaps there is a typo in this sentence, “The opening reception will be Saturday, April 6th, 2013 and will run through the closing party on Sunday, April 5th, 2013.” - ???
March 20
Now this makes sense to my wee brain - "The final day of the exhibit will be Sunday, May 5th. We plan on a closing celebratory party from 1PM until 4PM, and you can pick up your works then.” :)

Have the members who sumbitted entries to the jury for the Abstract Show been notified as to whether their entries have been accepted or not?
March 20
I have re-edited a photo and want to upload the new version. I can't find a link to allow me to do so on the site. Anyone able to help?
March 17
OK - I'll use my wife's - Oh well - What's mine is my own and what's hers is mine as well!

A slight problem - My credit card is an international one and the entry form won't let me enter my postcode! Help.
March 16
I submitted my photos! I just hope I did it right because the technological side of things throws me for a loop!

I am having diffuiculty uploading my abstract images for consideration for the upcoming exhibit. I have not had trouble in the past using our system to upload images for Brown Bag and Challenge, but it doesn't upload when I hit th eupload button Instead my image which I have selected usisng the files using the browse function disappears from the browse window without uploading as far as I can tell. The images have been sized to 800 pixels high.
I want to participate so I need help. Bob
