Seacoast Photographers Group Monthly Meetup

Monthly Challenge:
Our challenge for this month's meeting is Abstract. Between now and the meeting, take up to three photographs which somehow speak to your interpretation of the subject - please feel free to take great liberty with your interpretation of the subject.

Don't be shy, we have a very encouraging group of critics and we'll all learn something from the experience. Most of all, have fun shooting!

NOTE: There will be a photo show at the Town Hall Gallery this fall with an "abstract" theme, so go the extra mile this month and capture something you can enter in the show.

Instructions for Uploading Photos:

Upload photos at www.PhotoMeets.com - an upload site for Seacoast Photographers' challenges. If you already have an account, login and add your photos. If you haven't created an account there yet, click the "Request Invite" button, add your name and email, choose a password, and you can then upload your photos.

An account allows you to upload faster and will keep track of all your previous uploads. If you'd rather upload anonymously, simply click here, click the "Upload Photos for this Event" button, complete the required information, upload your photos, and you're done!

Brown Bag Bingo:

All participants should have captured their creative shot of whatever they got in the bag picked up in January and uploaded that photo on PhotoMeets.com  Don't forget to bring your bags again this month for the second BBB swap.

Location:
We meet at the beautiful Town Hall Gallery building, directly across from the bandstand and Town Hall Offices. Park on the street or in the nearby municipal lot and walk on over - you may enter at the front or left side of the building.

Other:
Bring other photos if you'd like feedback or critique, and be prepared to [helpfully] critique others'.

Anything photography- or photographer-related is fair game.

Wow Photoshop software is expensive. Does anyone have an older version that isn't being used? Like CS 2? I will buy it from you.

    • John

Yes, I've run CC, CS6, and CS5.5 applications when older versions work better than their newer counterparts.

If I bought the software, I would need the key number to be able to use it....right?

On another issue, can anyone tell me where I can get clear paper envelopes for 5x7 and 4x6 pictures? They are like glassine. I have been unable to find them in any store.

Hi Peter -- "Light Impressions" is a wonderful source for all kinds of archival materials for photography. I think that you can probably find what you're looking for with them. They've been in business for many, many years.

Jeanette, it was I talking about Topaz at the meeting.
Host programs such as those described offer a world of creative possibilities. There are several software companies that make products that work within these programs (plug-ins) that offer many more creative choices that in my opinion can't be duplicated. I have used OnOne software, Nik and Topaz software. They all are excellent, but I find that I now use Topaz products exclusively along with my host programs, Photoshop and PaintShop Pro X6. I think it is like choosing a make of camera, all are good, but it comes down to personal choice based on what you want to do as an artist or photographer. I suggest you go to Topaz Labs web site and look at their photo galleries to see if that interests you. Some of the worlds top photographers use their software. You can try some out for free. If you do decide to use any of these software plug-ins check to make sure you own a host program that they are compatible with.

Hi Gary I was hoping to hear from you. You have given me a good amount of information for me to look at. Thank you for your help.

      You are very welcome!

I found out that a lot of photographers are using computer software. I heard someone mention Topaz and I know about Photoshop. The speaker mentioned plug-ins or add ons and extensions. Can someone write up a short list of the most popular? I would appreciate it. I have never used computer software except for Picasa.

Jeanette; There is a good course for 6 weeks in Derry, NH at Hood Middle school for Photoshop Elements. They have Macs to use, large screens and a great teacher Nancy Hoffman. It is the basics and a very reasonable price on Tuesday nights starting March 4th. I posted the link for the brochure above, call the office even if it is past the sign up time. There was someone else asking about a photoshop course as well.

Thank you so much Sandy. I appreciate all your help. There is a meetup.com group at UNH for Adobe but it appears to be for very experienced users. I emailed them to ask that question.

It was a good meeting. There was some good information exchanged. It would help if people would speak up a bit louder so that those of us with hearing loss can catch more. It might help, in that large room, for the chairs to be circular so that we can face each other. Just a thought.

It's a tough room for sound, for sure. I think it's a little better when someone is actually speaking from the front of the room and facing the group.

John, I was thinking of a hand mic for the members that can be passed around, not a lav mic. I agree with Scott that it's better if you don't use one. I can almost always hear and understand what you're saying.

Even a hand mic wouldn't work when we talk about our monthly challenge pictures. It would take too long to pass it around.

Tonight, I mentioned a group that often discusses Photoshop. It is a Meetup group named, "NH Adobe User Group." They meet on the second Tuesday of every month, from 1:30p - 3:30p at UNH. Next meeting is Tuesday, March 11th at Taylor Hall.

I'm profoundly deaf and the problems are many with the venue. Echoes are a problem with hearing aids. I find the best is when John speaks without amplification , but that leaves audience response in limbo. No good solution.

I bought my EL Wire through Amazon. There are listings there today for as low as $5.09 ea. An FYI: although my blue and purple look different when turned off, they are the same color when illuminated.
Great photos last night. Can't wait to try the "rotating around a tree" technique.

I changed my yes to no. I'm coming down with a cold. I'm sneezing my head off and the Kleenex is my best friend. Enjoy the meeting. Frances M. Doyle

I had a great time. I am going to learn a lot from all of you. I was so nervous when I had to explain my photos and I neglected to say the the closeup of the sunset was cropped from an amazing shot I got down at the Cape. The shot of a lifetime to me. I would love to be able to share it with everyone at the next meeting if that is possible. To me the clouds look a fire burning. I am excited to be apart of this club.

Thank you Susan. I might join that group. I need to learn how to manipulate pictures.

At the meeting tonight, it was asked where you could buy EL wire. There is lots of EL wire on Amazon.com.

I'm sorry I can't make it tonight. I was looking forward to it but traveling 40 minutes when the weather is saying freezing rain or snow made my decision. Sorry I have to miss it but will check out the photos. Have fun

Are we doing refreshments this evening?

This one started out as 'Abstract Nature' and until I wound up with three shots that seem worth presenting I was sorely tempted to find a copy of the journal 'Nature' and enter a photo of the abstract from one of the articles contained within...

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
