Snowshoe adventure

Alright 30 Somethings.. let's go snowshoeing. This will be a great one for beginners or lovers of snowshoeing. I think I did this hike in the summer and the pictures of it in winter, look incredible. Be prepared to be wowed!

Denny Creek hike - 4 miles round trip, 700 elevation gain. Should only take us a couple hours - depending how much we play and take pictures.

We'll meet at Greenlake p/r and figure out rides from there. Please comment if you can drive when rsvp'ing. Definitely a 4wd will be needed and a NW Forest Pass too for drivers.

What to bring - snowshoes, poles (optional - I have a pair if someone wants to borrow them), gators, camera, water and cash for your drivers.

Think I covered everything, click on the link below to read more about it. The latest trip reports are helpful to read and get more information. Thanks!

Bummer Kara! Kevin and Kelly - thanks for the road update. The last trip report does say they stopped where the plowing stopped. So how 4wd do we have now? I may open up the wait list to a few more with that, to allow us all to get there. With the lower temps and rain this week, may have some fresh snow there. Probably doesn't answer you Kelly, but I think we will have enough drivers.

My ceiling just collapsed! I have a feeling I need to be here this weekend, to let my landlord/roof people in. Boo.

The trip reports of past winter hikes around this time of year mention the road towards the parking lot is cleared up until about a half mile from the trailhead. Unless you have a 4wd truck it doesn't sound like anyone is going beyond the cleared portion of road. Ground clearance in the deep snow seemed to be the issue there. I would think a FWD car with snow tires would do just fine going as far as the road is cleared a bit. I'm planning to drive my car with snow tires. When we meet in the morning, if we have enough AWD vehicles then I can leave my car there for the day.

It turns out I can't make it. Have fun and hopefully I can join next time.

I am excited about this! I forgot to mention if I could drive or not, and I cannot. I have a perpetually leaky tire, so I'd need a ride if someone has a spot. Thanks! Looking forward to meeting you all! Kara

What kind of pants? Snow pants? Jeans?

    February 18, 2013

    • Treela

i wear snow pants. Personal preference. But Jeans are a non-option imo. I probably won't snow shoe with anyone in jeans. It's not safe.

Layers - yoga pants in the car, put on snow pants when we get there. I get warm but not excessively hot. Jeans, never.

Hi Myriam - it's hit or miss. I've seen many times a lot of people cancel at the last minute. You might be in luck! Drivers wise - so far we have Harold (wait list) and Adrienne? Thank you.

I can also drive and carry 3 passengers, 4 if everyone in the backseat are good friends.

This would be a first for me. Don't have a suitable vehicle, so will need a ride if I make onto the 'attending' list.

Here is the most recent trip report from the WTA website: http://www.wta.org/go-hiking/trip-reports/trip_report.2013-02-11.7442768698. Also, my buddy tried to rent snowshoes from REI two days prior to last weekend and they were out so get your reservations in beforehand.

I have no boots, snow shoes or gators. What do you recommend? Buy? Rent? Where?

Rent from REI if you are a member. They are expensive to rent from if you're not. Sports Authority rents also for a decent rate. Like Amanda said, you don't necessarily need gators. I never wear them when I snowshoe. I just wear long, waterproof pants that cover my boots.

No 4wd here and probably not the needed clearance either. Will be a ridin'.

Hi Christopher, REI is probably your best bet to rent snowshoes. Any type of waterproof shoe/boot will work. Gators aren't recommended, more suggested. Buying is up to you, depends how much you would snowshoe. They can get pretty pricey though.
