Test Device Breakout Session Sponsored By AT&T

F5 Networks (map)

Selected By: Benn

Hello Everyone!

Those of you who attended my introductory speech will remember the desire to have major mobile operators in this country provide devices for us to develop and debug on. Alex Donn, a developer advocate with AT&T, has enthusiastically stepped up to work with us!

He will be providing some of the top end AT&T phones (no, not that phone. The Android phones!) for you to play with, get your hands on and test your applications on here at the game room at F5 Networks.

The phones will not be tied to a desk. You will be able to pick them up, connect them to your laptop, run ADB, capture logcat traffic, and actually validate that everything on your application does, indeed, work properly.

The initial guest list (phones):

Note: if you have specific phones AT&T offers that you would like Alex to bring, please let me know directly or in the questions on the RSVP page!

There will be WiFi and power provided, as well as drinks. Depending on turnout, there may even be pizza! I will keep the doors open as long as you guys need the time, so consider this an opportunity to get some serious work done, as well as some serious socialization while playing with these awesome new devices!

Speaking of turnout, I will be honest with you: the likelihood that we can turn this into a repeating event depends entirely on how many of you come to these first few sessions. If there's a reason why this event doesn't work for you -- timing, device selection, interest -- let me know, so I can adjust accordingly.

On a more practical note, please bring a photo ID and a credit card with you. The devices will be available on a 'checkout' basis FOR FREE (I won't do anything with the cards, they're just a placeholder), but I will need some tokens to keep things on an even keel.

Otherwise, have a great Labor Day weekend, and I'll see you then!

Cheers,
--Benn

I've seen a couple comments so far - this is definitely a chance, even if you don't have an app to test, to come and take a look at some of these devices and socialize with other developers!

This events was great! Spent most of the time testing my app with the Dell streak. These types of events are never long enough though. Identifying and fixing bugs can take days and these events only last a few hours. I just can't get enough of them.

It was good to get our hands on some devices. I would hope that AT&T would bring more variety and drop the Dells. They are horrible. The group was small. Hope more people start coming

Really well organized, Alex from AT&T brought lots of cool phones to test on, lots of smart people there to talk to about android stuff (code market etc). gained a lot of confidence in AT&T's androids and Alex was very helpful. Loved it.

Loved getting my hands on the phones. I was hoping and thought there would be enough that everyone could borrow some for a week.

Had a great time. Appreciated all who attended and shared their personal devices as well. Thanks Benn and Alex!

This was a great way to meet other developers and see just what it is people are up to in the Android community. It was also instructive seeing firsthand just what the Android market fragmentation can do to your apps. Definitely looking forward to the next one!

Great fun! Lots of useful information shared and it looked like a lot of value was generated by giving developers access to a number of very different phones.
