Dark Sun 4E @ Phoenix Games (Capitol Hill)

This is a follow up post to last's weeks meetup. We started a new, homebrew Dark Sun campaign using 4th edition rules. We're looking for more people who want to play on Wednesday nights from 7-10:30ish.

The first session was a lot of fun. For people who haven't played Dark Sun, it's much more dystopian future, less high fantasy. It's set on a dead planet where there is nothing but sand, rock, and shrubs. Something happened a while ago that probably involved sorcery and an epic battle which killed the planet. The seas are now giant masses of silt and sand. The few cities are ruled by God Kings as their own city-states. Steel is extremely rare and most weapons/armor are made of rock, bone, or hides.

The character creation rules are:

4th Edition
*1st level
*32 point buy
*No restrictions on race, DM seems open to custom races as well
*No divine classes because the gods have disappeared, psionics flourish, arcane is illegal in the cities, primal is the stopgap
*One Dark Sun wild talent psionic ability
*270GP and a mount (it's become clear that getting survival gear will be necessary, endurance checks are also common)

Current PCs are a Defender (Swordmage/Warlock) and a Controller (Psion)

For people haven't made a character before, the easiest way is to use the character builder at http://www.wizards.com/dnd/tools.aspx, but it requires a subscription. It's a simple user interface that clearly lays out the character creation process and does the math for you, speeding up the play at the table. We're also bringing some premade characters for people who want/need them.

Looking forward to next week's session!

Hey guys! Sorry if I couldn't make last week. I forgot that was Thanksgiving week and I had planned to go home on Wednesday night to be with Fam. I unfortunately not going to be able to make this week either due to work. Sorry for to miss out again, but still fight the good fight tonight. 'Till next time.

Next week I'll be in new York, so don't go to phoenix comics unless you want to try to join the encounters group for a session, they seem chill

Hey everyone, I may have to bail tonight due to work. I have to be on a work call starting at seven and not sure what time it may get done. I may be able to show up later, but if not, this is why. Have a good time.

OK people, tonight is the night.

So just to clarify a few things real quick before tonight:

-Your mount is free, it doesnt count toward your 270gp starting bank
-your mount must be size appropriate, example; liam can ride a medium sized creature as an acceptable(and more comfortable) mount, but matt has to ride a creature that's at least large size
-What you do with your free mount is your business, but if it dies the next one is not free. It can starve to death but does not require a survival day, just feed and water.
-Remember to calculate your weight and keep track of how its distributed, this could sometimes be a factor depending on what kind of bags you carry and what you leave with your mount. we've once looked back and asked, "how DID you draw that mace when it was supposed to be in the backpack you dropped on the floor at the beginning of the encounter?"

-There are no spells that can create food or water, those spells pulled nutrients from the earth and transmuted them into appropriate forms of sustenance tailored to the caster. This world is almost out of sustenance. there are super high level rituals you can find though.
-There are no divine classes or known gods, and for the sake of you not wasting points i honestly have not found a use for religion checks yet
-before you jump in you are more than welcome to ask some questions/tell me what you're going for and we can find a way to fairly make it happen, this whole things IS supposed to be about fun and imagination

Seven people might be better as two games. I would be happy to run one.

I made a shaman, but I can shelve that. I was also planning an artificer, and I'll make one other back-up. I assume having a back-up character is a good idea.

I'm not concerned with the amount of people showing up. If there are too many people, a solution will present itself naturally. The D&D encounters group meets at Phoenix Games on Weds as well, starts at 6:30 though. They had a large group last week that looked similar to what Paul is worried about.

I see in all the character sheets that there are rations present a lot but not survival days, they cost 5gp each, a little pricey, but using them gives you a day without worrying about sun sickness, kinda worth it.

I'm excited to play. Haven't roleplayed in awhile.

Are Kobolds a viable choice for race? I see no restrictions is written, but I kind of want to double check.

You can add a Druid/Shaman to the cast. He's ready to go and eager to right the wrongs of the world.

Woohoo I'll be there for sure unless I get stricken down by illness or bad luck. I'll go buy a player's handbook after I get off work.
