Where do you see society in 10, 25, and 50 years?

In 10 years there will be classes at community college on how to assist supervised machine learning systems. In 25 years, Americans will own summer homes in Canada and the birthrate in Mexico will be below the sustainable threshold. In 50 years, western Australia will have cities larger than any city today, the rich will replace entire organ systems to remain youthful, and the population will be in decline as poor people raise virtual children. In 50 years, there will be wars, plagues, weddings, divorces, and girl scout cookies.

How sophisticated do you think Machine Intelligence currently is?

Machine Intelligence is incredibly sophisticated but also incredibly specialized and isolated. Leading edge systems can see better than some mammals but they can't plan or anticipate movement. The best systems are like portions of a human brain but they are all disconnected and not designed to share insight. Still, the recent work on deep learning seems to have a promising and simple foundation that could accelerate innovation.

Do you participate in Cryptocurrency ventures?

No. I would not have purchased bulbs during the Tulip bubble either.

How does your futuristic perspective influence your political and religious preferences?

It doesn't outside of my belief that society is better when it is basing its decisions on true and accurate information.

What is your favorite futuristic movie?

Movies are pretty, but I really like books by Iain M. Banks. The Culture seems to have some of the best ideas about where we could end up.

I have worked for Apple, Google, Microsoft, eBay, and Amazon. I sometimes feel like I commute to the future for work.
