First Open Water Swim Clinic!

It's finally warming up enough that we can migrate from indoor pool swimming to open water!

If you've never done open water swimming before or the idea is a bit intimidating, this is the Meetup to attend! Jim is a US Navy 1st Class Rescue Safety Swimmer and will be teaching techniques for safety in open water as well as addressing concerns and situations that directly apply to racing in open water surrounded by other swimmers.

We will meet at Green Lake Bath House Theater Lawn, have some instruction pre-swim, address any issues with wetsuits, etc., and then head into the water to learn safety techniques. For the folks that don't need instruction, you can head out and do your own self-guided swim. We will end with a short (1/2 mile or so) open water swim as a group.

Bring your wetsuit! The water will more than likely be way too cold without one.

See you there!

Sorry you ladies missed today. There will be an open water swim clinic every month so you'll just have to come out in June :-) Hope you're feeling better soon!

This might be silly, but will we have time to get wetsuits on after the clinic or should we be prepared with suits at 10:30? Thank you!

    May 16

    • Benjamin S.

Even if you don't need your suit on right at 10:30 you should have it with you so you can get it on quickly.

How long do you guys thing the clinic part and swim part will take?? Have a bike fit directly following and trying to come up with a reasonable estimate of time-

I think you should count on 45ish minutes of actual "clinic" how-to, followed by a 20-30 minute swim. If it helps, I HAVE to leave at noon to make it down to Portland in time for packet pickup, so the whole thing will certainly take less than the 90 minutes published.

What brand for a wet suit is recommended? Sorry to sound ignorant but I am only familiar with speedo fast skin and I feel like that would not keep me warm. I only swam in indoor pools and lakes in TX in the summer (water is super warm). This is my first time for colder lake swim. Thank you!

I loved my Helix also. I have a TYR Hurricane now but still prefer the Blue Seventy I think. I don't swim much though, just enough to get through it!

I have an Orca Sonar and love it! I tried on several suits at Speedy Reedy to find the best fit, and the staff there is really great.

I'm planning on swimming a mile after my 8-mile SGLRG Mid-Morning run, if anyone wants to join.

    May 14

    • Benjamin S.

I've gotta run 16 but I'm gonna try a mile as well. Been a while since I've swam so we'll see what happens.

Going to try and get a mile swim in after the clinic. Just did my first mile swim in the pool yesterday so confidence boosted :)

I've seen several folks out swimming Green Lake the last couple of days, and I've been jealous. Looking forward to getting back in the water on Saturday.

Bizarre, but I was already planning on doing a mile swim at exactly that time this Saturday. Since this is a first, I'd like to join you. I tested water temp. It is up to 65 f already. No wet suit for me unless required.

The change of date and time works better for me. In fact, I'll bring my bike in hopes of a combo workout. Thanks Jim.

My apologies for changing the date, but I just realized I will be out of town this weekend so we will have to postpone one week. Hopefully some of you that couldn't make it will be able to now!

Question: As a newbie, I know little to nothing about wetsuits. I heard you can rent them. Is this something I should do or does it make more sense to buy one? I signed up to do the Issaquah Tri and I plan to practice OWS at least a couple times before the event. Any input or insight would be appreciated.

Shoot! I'll be out of town, otherwise would be there. Need to get my bum in the water!!
