Oregon Coast Multiple days Mid-Week Jan 8-13th

Sea Stacks, Waterfalls into the ocean, Cliffs... Northern Oregon Coast down to the Central Oregon Coast. Ecola State Park, Seal Rocks, Cape Kiwanda, Cape Perpetua and lots of other possibilities. Winter is the very best time for coastal photography, it is when you get great waves and dramatic skies. Oregon State Parks have very nice facilities in all the areas we will be, camping spots this time of year are $20/night and Yurts $36/night. Yurts can hold 3 comfortably making for some cheap comfortable camping. Reservations are pretty easy to get this time of year for Yurts and not an issue at all for camp sites. I suggest we use the comment feature in this Meetup to set up shared camping spots/Yurts. Jan 8-13th 2012, leave Sunday morning and come back Friday evening. Start out at South Beach CG for a couple nights then head north along the coast for a night at Cape Lookout CG then a couple nights at Newhalem Bay CG plus photo opps along the way. Going for multiple days gives us the best chance for some great light. This time of year is very unpredictable, but about the only weather that should cancel the trip is snow, though it could make for some unique shots :)

Plan on cool/cold weather/rain/wind. Extra socks in case they get wet.

Dawn 7:15 - Rise: 7:49

Set 16:47 - Dusk: 17:21

Tides will vary

The trip was awesome. Doug is great host. We went to bunch of really good places, did good scouting during day and shooting in morning and evening. Had some great discussions on various photography related topics and about great photographers including bush whacking, razor sharp rock climbing :P

Great Trip. Had some good light and great opportunities to capture the beautiful ocean scenery. We visited some of my favorite places to shoot and shared lots of knowledge.

    Hi, Marcy,
I will tell Doug you called. We are heading north toNewhalem State Park. Probably, will be there around 3pm. Depending on where we are shooting tonight, may leave shortly after dropping off our stuff. Cell phones are sometimes out of range on the coast.

Hello group. I am a few days behind but I am off work and at the coast. I tried Doug's # yesterday and no reply yet. Hoping someone could tell me where the group is to meet up. Thanks and hope to find you soon.

Hi Douglas, I have been in contact with Barbara. It sounds like Heidi and Barbara are carpooling. I am a SOV for this trip since I am coming down later on Sunday and have to leave rather early on Friday Morning. Thanks for planning this trip.

I am planning to leave from Olympia. If there is anyone from down thos way that would like to ride with me that would be fine. I am planning on sleeping in my vehicle rather than tent. So what is my share for a campsite?

I'm going to have to bail out of this trip - sorry for any inconvenience, but I see there are others waiting in line - I hope it all goes well and that you all get great photos.

I was searching for camping essentials list as this is my first camping trip. I found this list very helpful and thought of sharing with you ( though many items seems not useful for this trip). If you find anything missing here specific to winter please update.

You will need most everything you would bring for camping except a tent. I plan on my sleeping bag, pillow, a propane stove, one pot, utensils, dish soap etc... Rain gear :) As for food, I usually subsist on energy bars, beef jerky and the ocassional subway sandwich. I am not much into big meals while on a trip. The stove will be available to use at our Yurt for those more culinary inclined. I dont bring a cooler.

After reading Doug's post. My post sure sounded like I suggested for Greg to come along on the same car. Didn't mean it that way :o)

Might be a tight squeeze with 4 people plus camera gear plus camping gear for a week in my car. Might need 2 cars.

    Greg,
Doug has agreed drive. We haven't discuss the pick-up place but I would assume the same place as the last time I went with him. That would be at the McDonald where Hwy 512 and I5 intersect...

Tri, would you be driving or riding, and from where? And for the entire trip or part? Send messages on Facebook, if you'd rather.

Greg, if you want to call and reserve the yurts at those places, I can share...

    January 1, 2012

  • Douglas D.

Greg, the Yurts hold 3, there's a bunk and a futton/couch. Nitin or Tri would need to share another one with you. I have reserved 1 and Barbara has reserved 1 for all 5 nights. 2 nights at South Beach, 1 at Lookout Bay and 2 at Nehalem State Parks.

I think around 2 PM Barbara, give or take unless people want to leave a little earlier.

Sounds interesting. Would like to share a ride (or can drive) and yurt. Tent camping probably a bit chilly this time of year. http://www.facebook.com/greg.mcgonagill

Mary, if folks are intertested in going but not the entire time, we can meet down there too. As far as people, the early and late times we shoot at there aren't many people around anyway ;)
