Inaugural Seattle Legal Tech and Innovation MeetUp

  • Oct 29, 2013 · 6:00 PM

New max of 50. This truly is our max assuming full attendance. Please do sign up for the waitlist if you're interested because you will be automatically added to the list if someone drops out. It will also give us an idea for the demand for next month.

New location to accommodate the demand!.

Thanks again to Aeon Law for their generosity and big thanks to Avvo for offering their space. I've upped the cap to 40 and moved those on the waitlist to the "confirmed" list.

If you were waiting to sign up, go ahead and do so now. And, tell your friends!

We will have a great first program and provide the opportunity for you to connect with other legal hackers in the Seattle community.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Dan

I had to duck out before it ended, but it was well organized and there was a lot of energy. Can't wait for the next one so I can talk to more people.

Great turnout tonight, and looking forward to more great conversations in the future. As promised, we'll share tonight's slide deck, as well as send out a quick survey on future meeting topic interests.

Great start to a conversation I hope continues. Met fantastic folks who are interested in improving legal from a variety of backgrounds.

@Ericka - Great questions. Hopefully we'll answer many if not most tonight.

In short, we believe that there are lots of opportunities to innovate in the legal system and they include all of the areas you mention below. Technology can help with all of efficiency, transparency, and accessibility. Beyond that we believe that the legal system generally is in serious need of innovation, disruption, and rethinking. And, we lawyers and legal professionals need to engage the help from forward-thinking open-minded people like entrepreneurs, developers, and hackers. In short, we'd like to apply the "hacker ethos" to the law to see if we can't improve the system for those whose lives are touched by the law, which, for good or bad is every one of us.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to work late tonight. But one of the things I've been most curious to know is what are the goals of this group? Are they aimed at making the legal system more efficient/transparent? Is there also an effort to make the process more accessible? More just? I'm sad I won't be able to make it but I'd like to keep posted on where things are moving with this group. Thanks!

Currently a 1L at UW Law, with a background in materials chemistry, looking to get into IP law.

@Seann - We are actively seeking new space. I expect that we'll find it and likely soon. I'll send an announcement about this in a bit but please sign up for the waitlist if you would like to come. That will help us to gauge interest and make sure we find a space that will accommodate everyone.

  • Seann

Man, this group got big in a hurry. Hope we're able to find a larger space.

Oof, missed the 15 limit just by a bit... hopefully I can get off the waitlist, I'd love to come to this!

Wow, I work about a block away from Aeon Law! I am very much looking forward to meeting everyone on the 29th!

    October 2, 2013

  • Dan L.

@ Ginger: You are definitely the target audience and more than welcome to attend. Space constraints are driven by our desire to get something on the calendar sooner rather than later. If demand outstrips our supply, so to speak, that's a good problem to have and we'll seek more space. We look forward to meeting you.

  • Ginger

Since attendance is so limited, I wanted to make sure I am a target audience/participant before signing up. I am a developer with no special legal training or knowledge--just interested in learning about the industry and what I could offer as a developer.
