Welcome, everybody, to Seattle Node.js!
In the last three days our group has gone from non-existence with 0 members to 50+, and is still growing. I'm super excited to see so much interest around node and to know we're satisfying a big demand, creating a group to help it grow even more in our own back yard. Special thanks to everyone who has offered to contribute, help host or organize. I'll be reaching out to you guys shortly.
I'd like to suggest a date of next Thursday, Jan. 19th @ 6:30pm to dive in and have our first meetup, downstairs in The Easy @ TechStars in South Lake Union. The Easy is an enormous space that's designed specifically for events like these. There is wifi, a projector and stage, a sound system, plenty of table seating, and anything else you would need.
To me, this group's purpose should be furthering real use and real understanding of Node.js, for web development or however you want to use it. As such, I'd like to come up with a format for meetings that is roughly half passive-learning and half get-your-hands-dirty-and-dive-into-the-code-with-others educational.
I would love to have a couple speakers each give 15 minute presentations, after which we can organize everyone into groups to help each other learn and complete something within the next 30+ minutes. People who have never used or installed node can band together to get it up and running on their machines. Node newbies can work together to get a site up using Express. And, distributed node-heads can hack something out using Hook.io or otherwise work together on whatever they want.
If you would like to hop in front of a small crowd and talk for 15 minutes about something node-specific, contact me. And if you have any other suggestions on format or anything else, feel free to ping me as well.
Looking forward to learning and hacking with everyone!
