Exploring the Palouse

PLEASE DO NOT RSVP FOR THIS MEETUP UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE ALREADY MADE YOUR HOTEL RESERVATIONS.

Join us for a photographic adventure to the often photographed, always beautiful part of our state called The Palouse.  The Palouse is a rich farming area of almost 3000 miles reminiscent of Tuscany in Italy except instead of vineyards, the main crop is whete and rapeseed.  We will be going during the time when the hills should be changing color from green to golden which will lend itself to fantastic landscapes.  We'll get up before sunrise, go back out during the later light and spend the days reviewing images and scouting our next shooting location.  If you like old barns, this they are abundant.

This is not a workshop but rather a chance for a group of photographers to hang out, shoot some amazing scenery and discuss photography.  We do not have to all go out together but can gather in the evenings to talk about and share our images.  I will bring a screen and projector for this purpose.  You are free to deviate as you wish.  There will be no official agenda.

We will be staying:

Best Western
701 N Main St  Colfax, WA 99111
(509)[masked]

The goal is to get in 2-3 sunsets and 2-3 sunrises.  Most of us will be heading back Monday after sunrise but you can stay for as much or as little as you like.

For images and more information, check out this article:  http://www.luminous-landscape.com/locations/palouse.shtml

Carpooling is encouraged but not required.

I uploaded a few pictures here. I put some comments there to tell locations where they were taken. I have the rest at my website:

I'm sure I just missed everyone, and I caught it at the beginning of the storms. Anyway, I still would like to share. Thank you all, for showing your beautiful photos. It looked like a great time.

  • Greg R.

Thanks Lee, i will look forward too seeing your images.

    June 25, 2013

  • Greg R.

Sorry about all the down loaded images. After three days of shooting and lot's of images i just got carried away. I will delete all but a few this evening. I really want to see some images from everyone who participated.

    June 25, 2013

    • Lee W

I really like your images, Greg. Thanks for sharing. This is the fun part of photography. When we shoot at the same location, everyone has his/her unique vision of the image. It is enjoyful and educational to learn how others see. I will share mine. But it may take a few days to get everything organized before I can upload.

This is my first time to be in this area. I really enjoyed this trip. It was fun to meet many nice photographers. I now feel tired after driving over 1,100 miles in five days to explore many places.

Since I'm local to the Palouse I found some resources to pass onto the group.

"Photographing the Palouse" from the Pullman Chamber website:

    http://www.pullmanchamber.com/visit-pullman/things-to-do-in-pullman/photography/

Here is a link to a "Photographing the Palouse" brochure from the Pullman Chamber website:

    http://www.pullmanchamber.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Photo-Brochure1.pdf

Both have tips from local photographer's.

    June 20, 2013

  • Chris E.

I'll be arriving early afternoon tomorrow. I have some good maps of the area. We can break out into groups as we go shooting over the weekend. The weather should make it interesting this weekend!

    June 20, 2013

  • Lee W

Hi, Alan, I have arrived in Colfax. When will our group first meet?

    June 20, 2013

  • Lee W

The more homework I do, the more I realize that many viewpoints are in back countries only reachable by dirt or gravel roads. Should I drive my 4x4 instead? Any comments?

    June 19, 2013

    • Mary A.

Not necessarily. Depends on what car you have. A cute little Mazda convertible would have problems. A Honda civic it would depend on just how adventurous you wanted to be. I drove my husbands f150 truck and needed 4wd three short times, maybe not even then. I also spent nearly $200 in gas and drove little over 800 miles total. The gravel roads are pretty good. The dirt ones are the issue. Many even have no trespassing in winter signs.

      Thanks, Mary.

Funny, I was already going. I will try and meet up with you on Sunday late afternoon. I'm there for the Super Moon.

    June 20, 2013

  • Mary A.

Didn't this used to be scheduled for June 28th? Oh well, I just moved my hotel to the weekend of the 21st. They are booked full for Saturday but have openings on Friday and Sunday nights still.

    1 · June 3, 2013

    • Mary A.

It's already gone. Try la Quinta in Moscow id or try rooms in Spokane. I stayed in Spokane the first time I went and while a lot of driving its not too too bad. Also try calling the hotels as they will sometimes have last minute cancellations. There is no "Seattle freeze" out there - everyone is very friendly. Lastly there is a campground out there too.

      June 20, 2013

    • Ellie

      Thank you:)

      1 · June 20, 2013

  • Mary A.

Just a reminder it's a long drive out there (a good 5 hours) and a lot of driving when you are there. In case you need to stop halfway Moses lake is a good point and has a handful if decent hotels usually with availability. It's not too far from Palouse falls too. Also check the pass. I just made it back Monday as they were closing the pass for a little bit to do rock blasting. They are working on the road there on the way back to Seattle side.

    June 20, 2013

  • jenny

Have FUN everyone! Can't wait to see the Palouse from everyone's own unique perspective. I did a trip a few years back, and thoroughly enjoyed it. There are not very many cutoffs in the road, but so dead out there I was able to just stop my car in the middle of the street and get out and shoot.....lol. I'm sure the locals just love that!

    June 20, 2013

  • Lee W

While doing my homework for this trip, I run into this website http://thepalouseguy.com/ . It seems a good resource for photography in the Palouse region.

Ladies, I'm still looking for a hotel reservation...please let me know if anyone of you is willing to share her room with me...thank you:)

Colby - It won't let me message you through this, but you may email me at [masked]. I work in Kirkland and can be out of work as early as 3pm. The would get us out there in time for sunset on Friday. I'm open to returning either Sunday evening or first thing Monday morning.

Rebecca, did you make hotel reservation? I can't find any and i was won't if you like to carpool on Friday aftere work and may be sharing a room...thanks:)

Ok. I am in. I finally got Best Western in Colfax from Thursday to Monday, except Saturday. I will try my luck for Saturday later. I reserved for two queen beds. If anyone are interested in sharing the room and splitting the cost, please let me know.

I had to change plans today and drop the trip. I thought I'd mention that I had a reservation at the Siesta Motel [masked]) in Colfax and they tell me that they have a couple rooms available for this weekend.

    June 18, 2013

    • Glen M.

Greg, thanks for the notice, I grabbed a room, had reservations in pullman. There was a non-smoking room for $150 per night and a smoking one for $67 so I took the latter one.

Based upon a previous post about having long lenses, I am canceling my reservation. I only have one day and would like to spend more time with the meetup people. I need to save for some long lenses.

    June 15, 2013

  • Mary A.

I just canceled my reservation at the best western in colfax in case anyone needs a room. Btw the sun is setting at an angle that the better views at step toe are lower down and not necessarily the top. At least last night that was the case.

    June 15, 2013

  • John C

Sorry, can't be out of town that weekend, but it sounds wonderful! Hope you guys get some great shots and I'm looking forward to seeing them all.

    June 13, 2013

    • Alan L.

Do I have connections or what?

      1 · June 13, 2013

  • Alan L.

    Hi Alan -
    I used my[masked] a lot and borrowed a[masked] which I used a lot.
You can probably get away with the[masked] + the 1.7 TC. Don't use the 70-300. The winds are too high and the long zoomed lens hanging off the tripod will make blurry photos.
Bring a HEAVY tripod. And turn on VR on your lens even though most people say not to when on a tripod.
Most people in my group had blurry photos and didn't know it until they got back to the hotel. Winds are typically high on Steptoe and its hard to get a sharp photo.
For everywhere else in the palouse, the[masked] and a 24-70 will be just fine. Not much wide stuff happening unless you get some wildflowers and get up close to them.
If you go to Palouse Falls, you'll want something like a 16-35 to capture it all in one photo. Hope that helps. Good luck!

    - Matt Kloskowski

We will have a super moon that weekend. Its a curse (so much light) and a blessing (happens once a year).

    Some information on it: http://earthsky.org/tonight/is-biggest-and-closest-full-moon-on-june-23-2013-a-supermoon

Hello, I am new to this meetup group. I like to join this trip. I am online searching for a place to stay now. Is there anyone has an extra bed to share in Colfax?

    June 10, 2013

  • Marty

    Friday afternoon until sunset Saturday.

    June 7, 2013

  • Marty

I have been thinking about going to Palouse and the Law of Attraction has made it happen. GREAT!!! I work Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. Because I have just Friday night off I can be there Friday from about noon until Saturday sunset. HATE when work gets in the way of something I want to do. How will I find you guys Friday afternoon?

There is camping available at the fairgrounds in Colfax as an option for those who might be roomless.

    "Palouse Empire Fairgrounds
    Colfax, WA [masked]
Located 20 miles north of Pullman. 60 sites with water &
electric hook-up, 10 with electric only. $15/night. Dump
station on site. Open year-round but no water October 15
through April 15. No reservations required. "

I think there is also camping at Kamiak Buttes State Par but didn't look into that.

    June 4, 2013

  • Rebecca L.

Does anyone have an extra bed (in a non-smoking room) at the Best Western that doesn't mind sharing and splitting the cost?? I've run into the same no available rooms issue and would like to be closer to the group that what I currently have reserved.

    June 4, 2013

  • Mary A.

Sadly, I have a conflict with the weekend of the 21st. Sigh. I was really looking forward to going with other photogs! :(

I'm going to go either weekend of the 15th or weekend of the 29th. If anyone else will be out that way then, lemme know. Maybe we can meet up out there!
