Long Exposure: The Big Wheel & Waterfront

We'll walk the streets and the waterfront shooting as the sun sets and do some long exposure shots after sunset.  Perhaps we'll grab some food and beverages afterwards (Optional).  Long exposure times means bring a tripod and shutter release.  This will be a fun evening.

I missed out on Tuesday's event, do they do that spectacular lighting often? By the way, everyone's pictures look amazing.

    • Heather D

It wasn't as spectacular as Tuesdays show

      1 · August 4, 2013

it was a bit of a let down, for sure. It gave me more practice, though, so that was cool!

Hey y'all.... for those who missed this event, or just didn't get *that* shot, the Wheel will be doing a special show on Saturday from 9pm-11pm in honour of their millionth rider!

  • Amber

I had a really fun time with this shoot, and would love to do it again! (We were just exploring the other side of the wheel when the lights went out). I didn't know they did a special display for us, and will be sure to drop a note on their FB page. Thanks all!

This was the first event that I attended as I am new to this group and it was fantastic. It was nice meeting others interested in photography. I learned a lot and got some fantastic photos.

This was an amazing experience! I'd never seen the whole array before! AND I got some brilliant photos! AND I was surrounded by wonderful like-minded people! It just doesn't get better than that! Thanks so much Alan and Geoff! If I missed saying it was great to see you, it was .. I'm just terrible at names. :)

I'm ticked at myself....I got to the waterfront to take photos of the Big Wheel (they were doing a special light show for our photography group) and found that I had forgotten to put the CF card back in the camera. And, since I didn't take my camera bag with me, I didn't have a spare with me. I thought it would save them to my camera and I'd just have to connect it to the computer to retrieve them, but it didn't save them. I had some really great shots, too (when I save the 2 sec. preview). So, I have to console myself with the few I got with my point and shoot (which doesn't have a manual setting to get the really cool light patterns).

Any chance we can set up another one of these and get the special lights again?

    1 · July 30, 2013

    • Syrinda S.

I hope this will be regular. Really sad I missed it. Doubt they will do another light show "just" for us for a while. I think timing next year would be best not Seafair week. Curious if there were tons of tourists and how many of the 82 actually showed.

Dear A: sorry about the memory. I did that once. Hope I never do that again. It was a lovey night and LOVED the sunset most of the meetup shooters didn't see. What is this about a special light show? Marty Psychiatric Nurse Practitioer student & Street Photographer

Looks like we need to do another of this event maybe, since everyone had fun. I lost my lens cap somewhere there, so hopefully someone found one and picked it up. A HUGE thank you goes out to so many that were able to come out and shoot the special light show at The Seattle Great Wheel tonight!! It was wonderful meeting almost all of you, hearing your thoughts, sharing your experiences, finding out who was at what level, seeing some AMAZEBALLZ shots you all took and even learning something myself. I know we all took lots of photos so it will take a while to upload them, but remember that The Seattle Great Wheel did that show special just for our group so please post the pics to their page when you get the chance and even drop them a thank you on there as well. I know they will love to see both! www.facebook.com/The SeattleGreatWheel

And thanks again to all of you wonderful people for coming and enjoying such a special night. It was truly inspiring in so many ways...

We're at the aquarium looking at the wheel

      July 30, 2013

  • Anita E.

I'll meet everyone at the Big Wheel - not keen on parking up at Pike Place Market and having to pay to park (I get to park free on the street) and doing a bunch of stairs.

On another note, I'm reviewing some info on light trails. Tell me if these settings sound about right to get the Big Wheel lights (at least to start with):

    Shutter speed - 10"
    Aperture F/11
    ISO 400

    July 30, 2013

    • Heather D

The lower the ISO for night shots, the better.

      July 30, 2013

    • Anita E.

I'm down on the waterfront, but I'm over by the aquarium because that's where I can get the best shot

Just to let you all know, I made a request to the right person and they will be doing a special light show tonight just for this group!! It will start at 8pm and run until 10pm. Keep your cameras on and get some great photos! I'll see you all down there!! :)

My thoughts about early arrival: a great idea, but not necessary to get someone to provide tips and hands on help how to shoot at night later on. :) Shooting at night takes time--literally! You can't rush it, so there will be plenty of time for folks to share what they are doing. I do plan to go early (around 5-ish) and look for interesting street scenes around the market. If anyone wants to join me there let me know and we can pick a meeting place (Starbucks across from the market, corner of 1st and Pike is a good place). If anyone wants to meet around 7:00 PM on the waterfront, I suggest meeting at the wheel; I'll be there and will be happy to share what I know about night shooting.

For those of you wondering how to do that night photography stuff, remember to bring a tripod or, if you don't have one, a bean bag about 6-8 inches square and flat. You can place the bean bag on a bench or post and the camera on the bag and your camera will be stable while the shutter is open. Look for your camera manuals and read up on how to control your shutter and see if you have options for "mirror up" (for DSLRs) or delayed shutter release. If you have a shutter release control (wired or wireless) that's by far you best option. Bring a small light, even a key fob light is good enough, so you can see your camera controls if it is too dark and you're not very familiar with them. See you then!
