Exploring the Palouse

PLEASE DO NOT RSVP FOR THIS MEETUP UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE ALREADY MADE YOUR HOTEL RESERVATIONS.  I'VE RESERVED A BLOCK OF ROOMS UNDER SEATTLE PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB.  THESE ROOMS SELL OUT A YEAR IN ADVANCE.  COMMIT NOW!

Join us for a photographic adventure to the often photographed, always beautiful part of our state called The Palouse.  The Palouse is a rich farming area of almost 3000 miles reminiscent of Tuscany in Italy except instead of vineyards, the main crop is whete and rapeseed.  We will be going during the time when the hills should be changing color from green to golden which will lend itself to fantastic landscapes.  We'll get up before sunrise, go back out during the later light and spend the days reviewing images and scouting our next shooting location.  If you like old barns, this they are abundant.

This is not a workshop but rather a chance for a group of photographers to hang out, shoot some amazing scenery and discuss photography.  We do not have to all go out together but can gather in the evenings to talk about and share our images.  I will bring a screen and projector for this purpose.  You are free to deviate as you wish.  There will be no official agenda.

We will be staying:

Best Western
701 N Main St  Colfax, WA 99111
(509)[masked]

The goal is to get in 2-3 sunsets and 2-3 sunrises.  Most of us will be heading back Monday after sunrise but you can stay for as much or as little as you like.

For images and more information, check out this article:  http://www.luminous-landscape.com/locations/palouse.shtml

Carpooling is encouraged but not required.

Now that the event is approaching quickly, I am planning on arriving in time for sunset at Steptoe Butte on Friday evening. I will be staying in Colfax at the BW through Sunday evening. I will be doing an early morning shoot on Monday and then will be heading back to work in Bellevue for Monday afternoon. Is there any concrete plan to meet. I have interest in doing some nighttime photography if there are people interested in that as well. Let's see if we can get concrete times and locations to metope.

I just [masked]_6:35PM) called the Best Western in Colfax. They had a room with two queen beds for the nights of the 12, 13, and 14 and I reserved it. Would anyone like to share the room? The room rate is about $120 a night. Would anyone like to carpool, leaving Friday any time?

    1 · June 5, 2015

    • Michael T.

Hey Arnie, I'll split that room with you!

      June 8, 2015

  • Dave S

    Hi all -
I will be checking in Thursday afternoon and plan to shoot from Steptoe Butte for sunset. I also plan on shooting the Manning Covered Bridge for sunrise the next morning. I may stay at Steptoe after sunset to shoot the Milky Way, if weather permits. If it's too cold up on the Butte, I'll move to another location that I know of which incorporates an abandoned house and small outbuilding.

Friday after sunrise I will head out into the fields nearby and look for interesting locations to shoot.

If anyone is interested in doing some or all of this with me, leave me a note at the motel.

Hope to meet some of you there!

I am not able to make it on Friday and will stay in Moscow,ID so declined the event. However, I will be in Palouse all weekends (June 13, 14) and am wondering if there's a schedule for me to drop in?

What would a "leader" do for this type of excursion? I mean what do you expect from someone in this role. I went by myself for the first time last year and I knew about Steptoe Butte for sunrise and sunset. The rest of the time, I drove around the back roads looking for abandoned buildings, landscape opportunities, etc. At night I went out again and shot the milky way.

It's not hard to find subjects to photograph anywhere in this large area. Just get off the main roads and drive around until you find something of interest.

This is just my experience and I wanted to share this with you all.

    May 17, 2015

    • Alan L.

There was never meant to be a leader for this meetup. I wish I could go but I have to teach at Bellevue College that weekend.

      May 18, 2015

If you call the Pullman Chamber of Commerce they will be glad to mail you the photography brochure and map.

    May 16, 2015

I would like to know that, too. If Alan is not going and we don't have a leader, I may opt out.

I had made reservations for this weekend even before this meetup was created. I am staying at the BW in Colfax and will be arriving on Thursday night
I hope to do some night photography then and get up early on Friday for the sunrise.

Is there a designated time to meet each morning? Are there others going that will be there Friday morning?

If you can't find rooms in Colfax try Moscow, ID and Pullman, WA. Both are about 20 minutes or so from Colfax. The Pullman Chamber of Commerce also has a free map that you can pick up at the mall in Moscow. I live in this area and would love to join in on Saturday and/or Sunday. I don't have a DSLR but a nice bridge camera with manual settings option. I am really just learning but love taking nice landscape shots and photographing wildlife.

Hello... I'm so happy to find this meet up. I'm planning Seattle trip for June (I live South CA ^^), looking for places where I can take photos. How nice!! I don't have to be afraid of being alone.

I reserved my hotel for 2015 - will spend 2 nights there, but hoping to get a camping site for a few days after.

Note: I just purchased a map that is marked with all the best locations to take photos there and will be bringing it with me.

    May 26, 2014

    • Lynn D.

Anita, are you saying you found a map with pre-marked photo sites? That sounds great! Would you share where you got it?

What about 2014? That is what I made my reservation for....

    March 19, 2014

I made a reservation with the hotel under the block reservation for the Seattle Photography Club for 06/13/14 to 06/16/2014. They gave me the choice for 2014 or 2015. So I am assuming that is a mistake by the hotel?

Ryan, there are two planned, for 2014, and 2015. Alan is not attending the 2014 one, which is on a separate page

I just made a reservation at the Best Western, and she called back 30 mins later and said it was full for 2014, but they still have rooms for 2015. She referred me to the Siesta Motel at the other end of town, so I took that. [masked]

Now that I know this trip is for 2015, I'm in! I just made my reservations for June 12 & 13th (arriving Friday and leaving Sunday). This is my first time to the Palouse, so I do hope we meet up at the hotel with someone that knows where the best photo ops are located.
