Exploring the Palouse 2014

PLEASE DO NOT RSVP FOR THIS MEETUP UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE ALREADY MADE YOUR HOTEL RESERVATIONS OR FIGURED OUT ALTERNATIVE LODGING.

Join us for a photographic adventure to the often photographed, always beautiful part of our state called The Palouse.  The Palouse is a rich farming area of almost 3000 miles reminiscent of Tuscany in Italy except instead of vineyards, the main crop is wheat and rapeseed.  We will be going during the time when the hills should be changing color from green to golden which will lend itself to fantastic landscapes.  We'll get up before sunrise, go back out during the later light and spend the days reviewing images and scouting our next shooting location.  If you like old barns, this they are abundant.

This is not a workshop but rather a chance for a group of photographers to hang out, shoot some amazing scenery and discuss photography.  We do not have to all go out together but can gather in the evenings to talk about and share our images.  I will bring a screen and projector for this purpose.  You are free to deviate as you wish.  There will be no official agenda.

I will be staying:

Best Western
701 N Main St  Colfax, WA 99111
(509)[masked]

The goal is to get in 2-3 sunsets and 2-3 sunrises.  Most of us will be heading back Monday after sunrise but you can stay for as much or as little as you like.

For images and more information, check out this article:  http://www.luminous-landscape.com/locations/palouse.shtml

Carpooling is encouraged but not required.

Nothing was organized beyond the dates on the Meetup. I still had a great time seeing and photographing Palouse on my own though.

I don't think it even deserves a star. The entire Meetup was very disorganized. I drove from Coeur d'Alene, ID at 5 am to be at the Best Western by 7am on Friday and there was no one there.

I'll be arriving late Friday evening. Is there a meeting point and time for Friday sunset and for Saturday morning?

We just arrived at midnight. We are going to Dine N Dash Cafe on 1516 S Canyon Way for breakfast at around[masked], after seeing the sunrise at Steptoe Butte. My phone has no reception, look for the Gold Subaru Forester with an Australian flag on the bumper.

Oops, apologies from Shuyi that found this place due to a review, not realizing it was for Colfax, CA.

Anyone willing to carpool and share a room? My former ride and roommate cancelled.

Shuyi and I had a good, but tiring time. It was unfortunate we were not able to hook up with anybody else, except for Sandra Conti who was gracious to wait for us and give us much valuable information. She had to leave after breakfast Saturday morning, after waiting all day to hear from some. I think it would be wiser to leave messages at the hotels for one big reason, and that is because there was little to nil phone connectivity for both of us. (and Internet). Now that we are familiar with the area, we intend to go back again next year!

Alan, since you are not going, would it be possible for you to give us some pointers about the area? I'm going into this blindly, researching myself so as to maximize my time. I'll be arriving late with Shuyi, on Friday evening, so if anyone wants to meet us in the morning on Saturday for breakfast we'll be staying at the Siesta. I'm hoping to do a sunrise shoot before breakfast. I've been advised to bring a sunhat and sunscreen since it can get hot, but the forecasted temperatures will be in the 60s.

Heather, I live in the area and it is breezy, overcast, and cool today (looking like rain). I would advise you to bring a light jacket, sweatshirt, or something for layering as our weather can change rapidly. I don't think it will be hot but sunscreen is always a good idea.

My room is at the Siesta on the other side of town. I want to go with a group and was wondering if there will be a meetup place and time available for those that are not staying at the Best Western.

Yes I do. Did you want to meet prior to that?

I live in this area and would love to tag along for some of these shoots. I am strictly amateur and recently bought a nice bridge camera (Canon SX50HS). I have another event the same weekend but could come for a few shoots. There are no clubs in my immediate area and I hate to go alone.

Some tips, I was there last month, can't make it this time, out of town. Best Western is great, warm cookies and coffee served 24/7, free. Great free breakfast. Pool and jacuzzi , so bring swim suit. Shoot from Steptoe State Park, about 10 north of Colfax. Eat at Black Cypress in Pullman, you won't regret it. Oh yes, bring your longest lens, if you have a 300 mm or bigger, you will need it.
    Have fun!
