Seattle Scalability Meetup - Orleans (powering Halo 4) & Cliff Moon, Boundary

This meetup focuses on Scalability and technologies to enable handling large amounts of data: Hadoop, HBase, distributed NoSQL databases, and more!

There's not only a focus on technology, but also everything surrounding it including operations, management, business use cases, and more.

We've had great success in the past, and are growing quickly! Previous guests were from Twitter, LinkedIn, Amazon, Cloudant, Microsoft, 10gen/MongoDB, and more.

This month's guests:

Hoop Somuah, developer @ Microsoft,  Halo 4

Halo 4 is a first-person shooter on the Xbox 360, with fast-paced, competitive gameplay.  To complement the code on disc a set of services were developed and deployed in Azure to store player statistics, display player presence information, deliver daily challenges, modify playlists, catch cheaters and more.  These services needed to support high demand, with low latency, and high availability.  In this session will discuss some of the challenges faced while building this services, and how Orleans, Distributed Virtual Actors for Programmability and Scalability, was utilized to solve these problems.

Cliff Moon, CTO & Co-Founder, Boundary

The Java Hoonmobile: Designing for performance on the JVM

The vast majority of code in this world doesn't do very much.  Most code calls into a database, tweaks a few domain objects, and renders an HTML page.  This talk is not about that kind of code.  Sometimes your code has to go fast, as fast as the machine will run it.  Which turns out is really fast in 2014.  Faced with this challenge, you might reach for C, or god forbid, C++.  But wait, despair not.  Your life doesn't necessarily need to devolve into memory management and template hell.  There is another path: Java.  It turns out that if you start with the right kind of raw material with some tweaking and tuning you can turn this lowly blue collar grocery getter into a fire breathing dragster.  I'll share theory, experience, and working code from one gearhead to another.

Our format is flexible: We usually have 2 speakers who talk for ~30 minutes each and then do Q+A plus discussion (about 45 minutes each talk) finish by 8:45.

There'll be beer afterwards, of course!

Meetup Location:

WhitePages,[masked]th Avenue #1700, Seattle, WA

After-beer Location: Rock Bottom hosted by Greythorn

Doors open 30 minutes ahead of show-time. Please show up at least 15 minutes early out of respect for our first speaker.
