Skagit River Delta Day Paddle

We will take this opportunity to paddle the Wildlife Area and check out all the birds. I have paddled this extensively and it is a wonderful and sheltered area to paddle. We will not be going far out into the delta and the tide is a very low exchange only going down to 4-5 feet so there should be plenty of water for us. And the paddle back up the river to the dock should not to to taxing as we will try to go back around 3 to take advantage of the riding tide.

PLUS - We will have the Bird Lady (Phyllis) with us so we know what we are seeing. Also see can pick up plants for us to munch on  :)

You will need to have your own equipment for this paddle. Boat, paddles, PFD, and all necessary clothing and gear. You need to dress warmly and for immersion. Please bring an extra set of clothing.

We will meet in the parking lot and try to get on the water by 10am and paddle the delta wandering in all the slews,  taking a stop for food so bring something to eat and maybe a warm drink.

Let's get off the water by 4 pm and maybe stop for dinner on the way home.

Take Interstate 5 to Exit 221, just south of Mount Vernon in Skagit County. Go west from the freeway and turn right on to Fir Island Road, following the sign for Conway/La Conner. In 1.8 miles, turn left onto Wylie Road and follow for 1 mile to a T-intersection and a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife sign. Turn left and follow the signs to either of the two parking lots.

Parking/Restroom Information
There are two parking areas, each with a restroom facility. A Discover Pass or
Vehicle Access Pass is REQUIRED on ALL WDFW Lands.

Tide information:

Su 24 High 4:31 AM 9.5 7:04 AM Set 5:28 AM 86
    24 Low 10:55 AM 4.2 7:29 PM Rise 4:54 PM
    24 High 4:08 PM 8.6
    24 Low 10:38 PM 1.7

IMPORTANT - If you have not filled out your profile information in the Sea Kayak Meetup information please do so. Failure to have a completely filled out profile will cause you to be dropped from the paddle.

AND AS USUAL - All my paddles are one strike you're out... I will monitor the site up to 3 hours before we launch for cancellations. (for this paddle the cut off will be Wednesday before the paddle unless an emergency happens) But if we launch and I haven't heard from you that is a no show and you will no longer be welcome on my trips. Please don't sign up unless you really think you can attend. It isn't fair for the other paddlers. As usual, I will manage the trip numbers based on extra organizers and the paddle experience of the people who sign up. So jump on the waiting list because I frequently up the attendees. Thanks.

It is with much disappointment that I must bow out of this paddle at the last minute. This cold started on Monday or before, so I was sure I'd have it mostly licked by now. But it's just starting a new stage, swelling my throat and invading my sinuses. I'll be working on my wellness in anticipation of next Saturday, and then Potholes! Have fun tomorrow.

It gets better after day 8. Netti pot, cough drops, and rest helped me. Not quite sure what it really was- cold, allergies, whatever. Hope to meet/paddle with you one day. Take care.

Ok, letting everyone in because the day is set to be beautiful and it is a pretty benign paddle. Please let me know if you are not coming by Saturday sometime unless you have an emergency.

Might there be gear to borrow?

    March 19, 2013

    • Larry M

Sorry i did not answer this earlier. My typical paddles are only with folks who have all their own equipment. I will do paddles with Saul and he has paddles where he will supply equipment so watch for those.

Just wondering if any one going has extra gear. :) My guy and I have two extra pairs of snow-shoes, for example, but no space for kayaks. :/

I has better change my RSVP. I am coming back to town on Saturday...and Sunday my be too much of a"jet lag" day to paddle much. Waitlister spot open.

Hi Larry. Is this trip closed at 8 paddlers or will a few more of us slip in? Just asking so I can make plans.

    March 15, 2013

    • Larry M

I will send out a reminder next week by Wednesday to see if anyone is canceling. Also, since Phyllis is along I can see adding a couple paddlers. I will try to have that all figured out by Wednesday evening. I know folks have to make plans.
