SUCIA ISLAND - 2 day/1 night trip

hello!

looking to finally get out to Sucia Island this year - since i had to bail on it last year. hope you can join in.

* for EXPERIENCED kayak OWNERS, not renters

*approx 2 mile crossing - 45-60 mins - planning for minimum current at specified launch times below - camp on Sucia - no reservations possible/1st come,1st served - cramming this into 2 weekend days means utilizing ALL DAY of both days so leave early/return late

the plan:

sat 8/24 - leave at whatever time you need to in order to make the 6am ferry at anacortes to Orcas Island, back-up ferry at 7:25 - get to north end of Orcas and launch between 9-9:30am - get to Sucia and secure campsites - explore, camp, eat, sleep

sun 8/25 - wake up on Sucia! break camp, explore island, cross back over at 4-5:15, ferry is at 8:45 (personally, im not one for rushing and i think the 5:20 ferry is out of reach, and would probably be full anyway) - get home late obviously...

I am still thinking back to how great this weekend was. Many thanks to the Circumnavigator-Meister, Robert, for putting this together! :-)

Great trip! Thanks for organizing and planning Robert. Enjoyed spending the weekend with all of you. But it was good to have a full night sleep last night without being awakened at 3 am. by a crying kid...:) Just posted a bunch of photos, will send link to blog later. In the meantime, in case you're interested, here is link to my blog. Last three posts are about my kayaking trip to the Kyuquot area in July with lots of photos. PLUS earlier posts about a couple Meet-up trips. Enjoy!

We are bringing smoked salmon pasta with peas and parmesan for dinner. Also more wine and chocolate. Have games too - 5 crowns, Phase 10, Uno and travel Scrabble. We are bringing 5 Crowns for sure - please cast votes for the others. Who has lighting? We may need it :-)

Keep an eye out for a black Subaru with two red kayaks on top. That will be us, and Rob has my cell.

Let's do a shared meal for dinner on Saturday. I will have a stove/pot.
Dinner ideas? Pasta w/red sauce is easy. Wine. Chocolate. Almost all the food groups covered. I think frozen Trader Joes meatballs travel OK.
    Other ideas?
I'll be doing breakfast & lunch on my own. Keeping it simple.

We are going to try and bring our Coleman dual burner camp stove even if we have to stuff it into the cockpit.

ferry times are 6am and 7:25 - it would be nice to make this entire group stay together - i plan to leave at 4 am to make that first ferry - so im hoping we will all make the first ferry together - if not we will meet at the North Beach Public Access parking lot: https://plus.google.com/109763414868056326069/about?gl=us&hl=en
-and im thinking we will launch from there cuz there is parking right at the beach

    August 22, 2013

  • Rob I

when i look at north orcas island on google maps with satellite
there seems to be a small marina with parking (brandt's landing lane is the street)- if not that there's always the beach and plenty of it - id say we meet at the marina

    August 21, 2013

    • Christina

Can we leave our cars parked at the marina overnight?

      August 22, 2013

    • Rob I

tons of parking all around the 2 possible launch sites

      August 22, 2013

  • Christina

What will the conditions, currents, tides be like during our crossings?

    August 20, 2013

    • Rob I

should be easy - waves under 1 foot, slightly windy - currents go either east or west so we go across them

Robert- is the launch at North Beach on Orcas? I'm not familiar with Orcas and would like to drive there on Friday evening to camp. Do you know if that's possible?

    August 21, 2013

    • jill i

Don't think you can camp at North Beach. There's public access at the end of the road and the rest is private property. Check online for designated camping on the island, the closest might be Moran State Park a few miles beyond Eastsound, and it's likely full on a summer weekend.

      August 21, 2013

    • Rob I

sounds right to me...camping near there would be Moran

OK, I'm game for this. I have Monday off so a late ferry is fine. Would like to carpool/share meals/etc.
