Owens Beach to Burton, Vashon Island

Launch from Owen's Beach in Tacoma and paddle on the waning ebb current to Burton, Vashon Island.
http://www.vashonpark... This trip involves a 1 mile open water crossing from Pt. Defiance to the south end of Vashon Island. We will then paddle past the Ferry Dock at Tahlequah into Quartermaster Harbor,
http://www.dockton.co... and arrive at Docton. This is about an 8 mile trip total one way. We are only going to paddle one way!!! :-) I plan to drop off my kayak at Owen's Beach and drive to Docton before hand. I plan to ride my bicycle back across the ferry to Owen's Beach and meet up with everyone for the paddle. That way we will have my van to take everyone back across the ferry to Pt. Defiance for our return trip home, for FREE! I can accomodate a maximum of 6 kayaks on my van. More is possible if anyone else wants to do the shuttle - bike ride with me. The benefit to this is that we all get to go to the Quartermaster Inn for post paddle Nosh n' Brew!
http://www.quartermas... Please bring a comfortable change of clothes for the post paddle party! YEA!!!

    What a feel good memory I have from this trip! Everything worked! We hit our marks on the ferries, I got my butt kicked on the bike ride, we paddled through the current line like champions and had the ebb on our butts and the wind at our backs the whole way! Great meal at the Inn, great music, great friends! YEA!!!

    I mean the whole freak'n day ROCKED!!!

    Here's the PLAN...

    http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/schedule/ScheduleDetailByRoute.aspx?route=pd-tal

    Paddlers: Arrive at Owen's Beach at noon, (or sooner plz!!) and paddle by 1:00 PM.

    Its about a 2 1/2-3 hour paddle for the 8 miles to Burton, with current and wind assist it will be easy.

    Here is a link to Owen's Beach;

    It is really easy to get to, take I-5 south to Highway 16 west. Exit on exit # 3 which is 6th Street South. Go left (west) about 1 block to Pearl Street. Take a right (North) on Pearl and follow it all the way to the end basically. There will be a fork at the ferry approach to go to either Pt Defiance Park or the ferry. Go to the Park and follow the signs to Owen's Beach.

    We will benefit from the waning ebb current going north from Owen's Beach to Tehlequah on the south end of Vashon Island, so the open water crossing should be a fairly easy and quick paddle. There generally is an afternoon breeze from the south west that we will benefit from as we paddle north the remainder of the way to Burton in Quartermaster Harbor. The return ferry is free is because there is no way off of Vashon Island once you get on the island by vehicle, so they don't charge! Yea!
