Port Angeles Kayak and Film Festival

Description:  We are going to attend the Port Angeles Kayak and Film Festival on Sat. and Sun., April 12 and 13.  For those who can start on Friday evening, we'll attend the welcoming party at the Barhop Brewery & Taproom in Port Angeles.

Festival Info:  Info about the festival is at http://portangeleskayakandfilm.com

A great sounding variety of classes and tours will be available:

Meetup attendees should make their own festival classes and tours arrangements and registrations.

Overnight Accommodations:  Three options stand out:

Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln
Street, Port Angeles, WA 98362, http://www.redlion.com/our-hotels/washington/port-angeles/, across the street from Hollywood Beach, fifteen miles from Freshwater Bay and Crescent Bay, mixed TripAdvisor reviews, the eskimo roll classes will be in the Red Lion pool.

*** The event host will be staying at the Red Lion.  If you choose to stay at the Red Lion, ask for the special Kayak and Film Festival event rate ... it is significantly lower than the regular rate and the AAA rate.

Olympic Lodge, 140 Del Guzzi Drive, Port Angeles, WA 98362, http://www.olympiclodge.com/, excellent TripAdvisor reviews, two miles from Hollywood Beach, where much of the activity will be, seventeen miles from Freshwater Bay and Crescent Bay, where the surf and rock-gardening classes will be.

Camping at Salt Creek Recreation Arera, near Crescent Bay and Freshwater Bay.

Note: Make your accommodation reservations early; the Olympic Lodge advises us that they and other hotels tend to fill up for this event, and likely the campground will, too.

Welcoming Party:  A festival welcoming party starts 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at the Barhop Brewery & Taproom, 124 W. Railroad Ave., Port Angeles, WA.

Details and Activities:  Details, activities, and carpools, if any, will be as arranged by the meetup participants.  In addition to the kayak festival classes and tours, we may do some paddling on our own.  Also, if anyone might want to hike some, bring your gear for Spring snow hiking, which is nearby.

Kayaking, kayaking, kayaking! A fantastic weekend of kayak festivities. The weather was amazing, and so were the doings. The classes were great; I learned tons; my fav was the surf class ... now that's fun!!! Great seeing everyone out there. Expect a posted meetup weekend soon of surf play and rock gardening out at Crescent Beach and Freshwater Bay.

G'mornin', everyone! G'sunny'mornin'! Paula, Jenn, Kathy, Tom and I started the festivities at the Bar Hop (... maybe some others were there earlier). I assume y'all are scattered around PA? Paula and I are at Room 250 in the Red Lion (... pleasant surprise, nicely renovated hotel) and I'm at cell phone[masked] if there's any "hello" or coordinating to do. Likely see everyone in the sunshine on the water. "Intro to Surf" for starters for me ... hee hah!

Who would like to share a room at the Red Lion Hotel Friday and Saturday nights? I have both nights reserved with 2-beds to the room. (Sorry, women only!) Let me know.

If anyone is staying at the Red Lion Hotel, ask for the special Kayak and Film Festival event group rate ... it is significantly lower than the regular rate and the AAA rate.

Okay - so I'm not quite ready to camp but did reserve one of cabins at the KOA - If anyone is interested in staying there with me and splitting the costs. email me - can take 3 if 2 folks share a bed or just 2 additional people. You would need to bring sleeping bags and I'll bring a campstove to make morning coffee.

Sounds good! The website has a 10% discount for this time period - did you see that? Need me to email it to you?

If you buy a pass for the entire event, how do you register for the individual classes?

    March 10, 2014

    • Aaron S

My understanding is that when you obtain an all-festival pass, you get a "coupon code" to enter into individual event registrations. Any questions can be answered by Tami at[masked]

Hey Aaron -- thanks for getting this started!

I'll be staying in the Saltwater Creek Campground, about 17 mi from Port Angeles. It's a lovely site, up on a bluff, and offers some kayaking options as well. Reservation of a site requires sending paper and a check via snailmail (!). More info here:

Martina, that looks to be a cool campground in a great area with lots of fascinating features. Glad you signed on, thanks for posting this excellent accommodations option, and looking forward to seeing everyone on what figures to be premier paddling and a great party weekend!
