5/13 - 630pm on Lake Union's Portage Bay - those that have their own kayak

  • Montlake Playfield

Summer is almost here, the weather is supposed to be nice, We have a full moon it's time for a paddle.

As discussed earlier with the cost of maintaining the gear, I am starting to post events separated into the ones where people borrow gear (I'll charge $10 for those) and ones where people have their own gear (those will remain free).

Lets meet for a paddle on Lake Union. This trip will depend on the weather. We’ll meet at Montlake Playfield at 6:30pm for a 60-90 minute paddle amongst the house boats.

The water is warmer this time of year and it's frequently windy, our launch and route is fairly sheltered but we still need to use our heads and our equipment.

If you are signing up in this meetup, I am assuming that you have your own kayak, if you need to borrow then you can sign up in the other meetup.

I am not bringing kayaks for people in this list, if you need to borrow a kayak you need to sign up in the other list:

I can't make this meetup, but I'm intrigued by the launch spot. I always have launched at Waterway no. 18 for Lake Union, or at the old Museum of History and Industry for Union Bay and the Arboretum. My experience with the bay outside of the Mountlake Playground was that it was extremely shallow mud and I was more shoving the kayak along than really floating, but I have never explored it from the land side.

The water level is definitely higher this time of year, and I've been thinking of a return visit to that little bay, but now I'm intrigued to see what draws you to use a place with such a limited parking area. Hope you have very nice, calm weather for your moonlit paddle.

Michael, this launch site works decent when the the water level is reasonably high, they built a launch there and filled in the near shore area with gravel, of course as you get out further it gets really muddy.

Thanks for the reply, Saul. I began kayaking last fall, just as the water level was falling. I didn't realize that the level went up and down over the year. So when I explored that little cove over the winter, it was mud covered by just a few inches of water. I didn't find a way into the shore, but I probably got tired of pushing the kayak through the mud. The rise in water level alone is plenty to float my kayak. It's also been amazing to see so many people on the water as it warms up; I've been used to near perfect solitude around Portage Bay and Union Bay.

We must have taken a wrong turn, ended up somewhere else, but had a lovely paddle just the same. Thanks for encouraging mid week paddling!

That would be great - esp. if you have a smaller kayak to borrow. Just left you a message on your cell.

I'll be coming from the north - hopefully traffic will be kind. Since it's a SKI level trip, I'm going to bring an Airfusion IK and we'll see how it keeps up. I've taken it to a few intro classes and it's performed well enough, but this will be my first full-on paddle with it. Looking forward to meeting you all!

Was looking forward to going, but I pulled a muscle earlier and won't be able to make it out. Another time!

Saul: I'll be there at 6:30 but my sister and bro-in-law have a tandem and MAY want to join us after work. Do you expect we will launch by 6:30 and what direction will we be heading in case they want to try and catch up?

    May 12

    • Saul_K

Just moved to the area and haven't paddled here yet. I'll be there tomorrow with whatever gear conditions require, but was wondering what some of you "regulars" think about the necessity of a dry suit/wetsuit tomorrow. I don't know what the water temp is in lake union right now (or better yet where I can find out) but I seems like we could be hovering over the magic 120* combined mark this week. My fiancee doesn't yet have dry gear but has her own kayak/paddle/pfd etc. What is safe this time of year?

Anyone have a tandem???? I would love to join.
