Labor Day - Lower Columbia River Trail Paddle

Description: ... We will be taking a Fri - Mon trip down the lower Columbia river.

Details: .... The plan is to drive down Friday morning leaving at 7am and stop at the Willow Grove Boat Launch where we will drop cars to get us back to Vancouver to pick up the cars we leave there. We should be able to get to Vancouver to launch around noon. We will launch from Vancouver Marine Park (river mile 108) and make our way down to Willow Grove (river mile 58). This is around a 50 mile paddle. We will be launching Friday around lunch and paddling down river 15 miles per day. So we should have plenty of time to poke around in all the slews and islands on the way. The low tide is in the morning around 11:30 but we are pretty far upstream so I don't expect much tide influence. Pretty low tidal exchanges during the weekend of 6 - 7 feet.

Preliminary Plan

Friday - Launch, 15 mile paddle to Bachelor Island, primitive camp.  We may stop early if the winds come up and camp on another accessible island.
Saturday -  Launch, stop at Warrior Rock Lighthouse 4 miles upriver, launch and paddle a mile to St Helens landing, lunch, restrooms, and water refill. Launch for 6  mile afternoon paddle to Goat Island , primitive camp, river mile 81
Sunday - paddle  6 miles to Port of Kalama marina, rest rooms, water, cross over to Sandy Island for lunch.  Paddle 6 miles to Cottonwood Island, primitive camp.
Monday - launch, 8 mile paddle to Walker Island for lunch. 4 mile paddle after lunch to Willow Grove and the car shuttle to Vancouver.

Check the Water trail here.... http://wwta.org/water-trails/lower-columbia-river-water-trail/

Parking/Restroom Information: .... info to come

Launch site Vancouver Marine Park, restroom, no parking fee
http://www.estuarypartnership.org/access/vancouver-marine-park

Take out Willow Grove, rest rooms. No parking fee
http://www.estuarypartnership.org/access/willow-grove-beach-launch

Camping Info: .....The plan is to camp on islands each night and stop at Marinas along the way to fill water use facilities.

MEALS: I may not have group meals this trip. I will wait and see what sign up issues we have.

Carpool: .....

Larry -

SK Rating: Sea Kayak Trip Ratings I am rating this a class 3 paddle do to the possibility of wind and waves on the river.

Equipment Requirements: Kayak, paddle, pfd, paddlefloat, pump, sprayskirt, headlamp, charts, navigation gear (compass/gps/??)vhf radio (edit as needed). All you own camping gear.

Chart: ...

Tides: ...

NOAA Wind:
3 days prior to paddle

IMPORTANT - If you have not filled out your profile information in the Sea Kayak Meetup information please do so. We need this to be assured that the group is competent to meet the challenges of this paddle.  For safety reasons we will not accept anyone whose profile information does not assure us that they have the necessary skills. Failure to have a completely filled out profile can cause you to be dropped from the paddle.

AND AS USUAL - All my paddles are one strike you're out... I will monitor the site up to 3 hours before we launch for cancellations. (for this paddle the cut off will be Wednesday before the paddle unless an emergency happens) But if we launch and I haven't heard from you that is a no show and you will no longer be welcome on my trips. Please don't sign up unless you really think you can attend. It isn't fair for the other paddlers. As usual, I will manage the trip numbers based on extra organizers and the paddle experience of the people who sign up. So jump on the waiting list because I frequently up the attendees. Thanks.

What a great trip! Thank you Larry and everyone for your support and camaraderie. We sure were lucky with the fast current - 57 miles! That warm bouncy rain was unique, along with our group shampoo afterwards. Now we need some more photos posted.

Wow, what a great group. I met some new folks and had a great time paddling in the rain. But no camping in the rain. And no big wind on the Columbia.

Thanks Larry for leading another great trip. It was fun paddling with you all. Mark: better luck catching a salmon next time. Sue: for being a great paddle partner, scud running ships, and putting up with my great steering skills (straight into a pier). Nicole: for bringing back the kid in me, and jumping off the bluffs into the unknown (even death). Ilana: for all the extra munchies and chasing ship wakes, and getting stopped by the police for going too fast. Amy: for the blackberries. T: for 7.5 mph power sprint in my tandem to the finish. Karen: for the great "p" stories. Brian: for the great company. Holly: for the great ship to ship water duels.

Am i the only one who's completely stoked for tomorrow?

If I'm reading the map right, Willow Grove launch is about a mile past the Willow Grove Marina, in Longview. See you all there around 9 tomorrow!

    August 28, 2014

  • Holly

Sorry for the late cancel...afraid I may not be up to this mileage and definitely not excited about 3 am departure. Have fun! Am sure it will be beautiful.

No stove at my house, sorry. have fun!

Mark, you may know more about safety of lashing another kayak on than I do. I have Hull Raisers on very secure bars on top of my Kia Sedona. After having seen some of the arrangements Saul K has put on top of his vehicle, it seems like we could throw another one up safely, but that's your call. Also, since I just don't know that much about the shuttling situation, not sure of what works best - maybe we should plan on throwing one on top just for the trip from the take out to the put in. Your call. And thank you for the fun and laughter comment - I was beginning to look at the weather forecast and wonder what I'd gotten myself into!

    August 26, 2014

    • Mark B.

Ilana, holly and i are going to carpool together. It seems like we may need the extra spots for the shuttle. Thanks for getting back though. This is going to be... wait for it.... epic!

can't seem to find my backpacking stove, might be at Cheryl's. can I use someone's. will just need to make pasta for dinner 2 nts.

Holly - I'm going to bring my one burner standing coleman stove and 2 cartridges - I'll give you a cartridge to carry :-)

      yea, thanks Amy!

      August 26, 2014

Looks like we had some shake up on paddlers - sad Jody isn't coming but Happy Dennis & Miss Lisa will be along - I can take a smaller width wise down the middle but you must supply foam and tie downs. I'm taking Karen V. to the put in -

Just to verify. Meet at willow grove river mile 58 at 9-9:30, drop cars and drive to river mile 108. Where much fun and laughter will be had floating the river. Looking forward to it. Thanks Larry.

I believe Larry's point is to leave a car or two at the take out, then continue down to the put in area. Longview is North of Vancouver and is on the way. It doesn't make sense drive back up after going to Vancouver. If we did that it would add about 1.5 - 2 hours time and delay the launch time.

      August 26, 2014

    • Holly

Oh ok Ed. Thank u for some clarity. I'm confused since theres conflicting info in the trip description..

      August 26, 2014

  • Ed H

Looks like the greatest chance of rain will be on Sat & Sun. So I ordered a MSR Zing tarp from Amazon to bring. It should arrive by Thurs.

  • ilana w.

    For anyone with answers:
    1) Are campfires allowed on the islands? Trying to work out what cooking supplies to bring.
    2) Driving from Bothell, anyone want to carpool? We could probably safely lash another kayak on top of the two already up there.
    3) Are we doing a caravan from somewhere in particular, or just meeting at the take-out?

    August 25, 2014

    • Larry M

Not sure about the campfires. I know it was shut down earlier but I haven't checked lately. I will try to check now. Car pooling is great. However, We need to leave at least one car in Kelso so we can come back to Vancouver to get the other cars. That way we don't have to drive to Vancouver and then drive back to drop a car. If everyone has 3 kayaks on their cars we will have to.

      August 26, 2014

    • Ed H

I looked at the campsite map and selected campfires=yes and none of our spots showed up. So I'm guessing that no campfires are allowed. Only Goat Is has a field for Fire Rings, but that is blank and has no value. The same is true for picnic tables, therefore I'm going to try and bring my portable camp table along.

This was a memorable trip last year. I'm sorry I won't be able to make this portion. Have a good time everybody!

    August 25, 2014

  • Ed H

My original paddle partner can't make this trip, so I now have an open spot in my Delta tandem if anyone wants to join me.

    August 20, 2014

    • Ed H

Ok Jenn I'll see you on another trip then, and I will keep you in mind for a paddle partner in the future. Larry: I'll be padding with Mt Girl. You can adjust my +1 count to +0 since Mt Girl is already on the yes list. That will make room for another as Jenn already mentioned. Ross Lake update: Winds were not an issue coming out either of the last two days. Nancy and I had a great hike up to Desolation Peak Lookout (lot's of wildflowers), while Edie paddled over to Silver Creek CG to relax. We ended staying two nights at Cat island (no issues). While camping at Rainbow Point (last night), I took Nancy's boat over to Big Beaver at sunset to look for my water filter strap I left there on a tree last year (by the mouth of the river). I didn't find it. I then paddled back in the dark by GPS under the stars (that was exciting and interesting, only being able to see the dark ridge lines against the starry sky).

I am not instituting a food plan this trip. Everyone is on their own. Feel free to buddy up with someone if you can. Ed, who is taking the other seat in your boat. I will be updating the trip tonight so take a look later.

    August 24, 2014

  • Mark B.

Looking for someone to ride down with if possible. Are we all on our own for food? Whats the plan if any?

    August 23, 2014

  • Jenn

Hi Ed, I am interested to join you in your tandem on this trip! Soon as I find out if I'm in, I'll request time off for Friday launch. Cheers!

    August 20, 2014

  • ilana w.

Larry, thanks for moving us from the wait list to the going list! Very exciting! But I have a few logistical questions, to make sure we have the right equipment for this trip. Could you please call me today or tomorrow at[masked]? Mainly it's to confirm you know it's two of us, to confirm our kayaks will work okay on that particular river, etc.

    August 19, 2014

  • Martina M.

Will be out of town till 9/3. If there's sufficient interest, maybe some of those on the waiting list could consider a later trip?

    July 15, 2014

    • Jenn

Hi Martina, I had thought I originally signed up for this trip...but after the list was wiped, so was my memory! I'd love to do this trip, still. If you plan another, I'd be game if it only required taking a single vacation day off, along with the Sat/Sun weekend. Thanks!

      August 10, 2014

  • Larry M

I relisted this trip with a later signup date because I flet it was listed too early. If you were on the original trip please let me know - email me - and I will try to add you if we have cancellations. I am pretty sure other organizers will be listing Labor Day trips in the near future so this will not be the only option.
