Paddle Safety Skills Practice: Repeating Session

Everyone involved with sea kayaking should receive instruction early on in safety and rescue skills.  Kayaking is fun, takes us to beautiful places, and is easy to get started with.  But the risks are high if one goes out in conditions without solid and practiced skills in bracing, self-rescue, group rescue and other safety skills.

As we advance, it both expands our capabilities and increases the fun to add skills, such as rolling and static bracing, to our repertoire.  But again, it takes practice go get these skills reliable.

What This Meetup Is Not:  This is NOT the training you need to get started.  No training is being provided at these sessions.  If you have not yet received basic instruction in sea kayaking safety skills, please, post-haste, sign up for a session with one of the following outstanding local training providers:

Northwest Outdoor Center

Kayak Academy

Rogue Wave Adventures

Cascade Canoe & Kayak

Alki Kayak Tours

What This Is:  Initial training is not enough.  It is important to regularly practice and improve our safety skills.  This is a practice session for Seattle Sea Kayak Meetup Group members and guests.  It is practice only - no instruction will be provided.  Just a group of paddling buddies practicing together and helping each other out with everything from basic re-entry to advanced Greenland techniques.  It is therefore important to understand that each person is responsible for their own a** - I mean safety.  Use caution, prudence, and practice what you’ve been taught.  Waivers will be required on-site.

Practice sessions that provide instructional coaching include:

Kayak Academy Wednesday Evening practice series at Tibbits Beach on Lake Sammamish:  Highly recommended, especially if you are on the east side.

Rogue Wave Adventures Tuesday Sessions at Magnusen Park:  Check with the contact information above to find out if/when these are occurring.

Schedule:  Alternating Thursdays (may vary).  Always check the Meetup group calendar to see if/when this is occurring.  Sessions depend on a group organizer being available, and their preferred time/location.  Although, of course, if it’s not on the calendar, you can always agree informally to meet with some paddling friends for practice off-calendar, and in the location of your choice.

We’ll start at 6:30, practice for an hour or more, then decide if we want to find local food & brews afterward.

Location:  This may vary depending on the organizer of the week.  We will start at the Kayak Beach at South Lake Union Park - it being central for west-siders, freshwater, nice beach.  It also allows for anyone who might need to rent a kayak at nearby Northwest Outdoor Center for the session.  Parking in the Westlake lot nearby is free on the street side, and parking should be opening up from commuters at this time of day.

I have an extra kayak already strapped to the car. It is a Dagger Blackwater 12.0 in case Emily is interested in using it.

Pamela, take the Dagger--it turns out I have a big exam I need to study for. Doh! Sorry about that, guys.

Thanks for getting our dive-right-in social set out there and practicing, Larry and Phyllis. :)- Nice comfy warm water, too.

REMINDERS: 1) This is not a training session. Plan to come and work with others practicing what you've been trained in. Yes we'll help each other with tips etc, but nobody is "in charge". 2) We will have forms for you to sign your life away; please complete one before you get in the water. Looking forward to splashing around with you guys soon.

I don't have a kayak. I will show up and have the $10, but hoping that I can use someone's kayak. Do I need a dry suit? Please advice. Thank you. I am going to want to buy a kayak in a few months, but can't afford the new ones right now.

It's going to be a hot one today. I'm planning on wearing my swimsuit and shorts or quick-dry pants. Just beware that arms and legs can get beat up in this practice if they are bare.

      And remember the sun-block! ;-)

I should have mentioned - if anyone else needs a kayak, that NWOC is also right on the water, so if you do rent, it's a short paddle over to the kayak beach for our practice session. Come one come all. :-)

Boats can be rented very nearby at Northwest Outdoor Center. One of the benefits of of this location.

Does anyone have a spare boat they can bring for Emily?

Parking is openning up around that time in the lot that parallels Westlake, near the kayak beach. Wheels are nice but not necessary as we can help each other too.

I managed to find a parking place in the lot along side the lake. You may want to brig some wheels as you may not find a close parking place. The water is really warm. Last time T and I paddled around for a while after practice because it was such a nice warm night. We may do the same Thursday. We were out of the water before dark though so a light is probably not needed.

Where should I park? I hope I don't have to walk too far. Do we need a headlight?

Yes, practice this time of year is so fun with the water warm and inviting. I made tremendous progress at this wednesday's Kayak Academy practice session, working with Martin. Really looking forward to this next one. People really should not underestimate the value of these practice sessions - both for skills development and for sheer good fun!

Are they at Magnuson again this year?

      July 18

    • Phyllis

The Magnusen practices are not a regular thing these days, and the KA sessions are way over in Issaquah. Which is why we started this series - regular practice for West-siders. This one is at the S Lake Union Kayak beach. Keep an eye on the venue for future sessions tho, as it may be different on different weeks.

Just finished the first night practice. The water was soooo warm. I wore a t-shirt and shorts. The night was beautiful and we took a short paddle after the practice. T and Whitney demoed a brand new rescue technique I will show you if you come down.
