TGIF Wave-Surfing and Cold-Water Skills Practice (at Alki Beach)

  • Seacrest Boathouse

1660 Harbor Ave SW, Seattle, WA (map)

    47.588806 -122.380554

  • Meet at Seacrest Boathouse. Launch at the beach just north of the boathouse.
  • Description: We are going to paddle to Alki Beach, have fun surfing breaking ferry wakes (... and brisk-north-wind waves if we get lucky?), get wet (... surfin'-safari wet and on purpose), and practice our various rescue techniques.  And we're not gonna get hypothermia, right?, 'cause everyone's gonna wear immersion gear (preferably a drysuit), right?  And, in addition to having some fun, we're gonna find out how well our immersion gear and rescue techniques work in cold water?

Sign-up Requirements:  To sign up for this paddle and practice, you must be an intermediate or beyond paddler with bracing, re-entry, and rescue skills and practice.  The required kayaking experience and skills need to be documented in your meetup-profile information and your answers to the sign-up questions.  RSVP's without answers to the sign-up questions will be deleted.

Later Arrival:  If you're coming later than our launch time, you're welcome to drive down to Alki Beach, see if you can find us, see if you can find parking, and launch there.  If that's the deal, please call your host at[masked] before 6 p.m. and let him know.

Equipment, Attitude and Indemnification Requirements:  You must wear immersion gear ... preferably a drysuit with insulating clothing under, upper body and lower ... for this paddle and practice.  No exceptions.  For the safety of all, you must also stay with and cooperate with the group.  And, last and not least, this is not a kayaking skills lesson nor a guided paddle and practice; you need to already know kayaking rescue techniques, and assume your own risk for your own safety.

    Schedule and Itinerary:

5:30 p.m. - Meet at Seacrest Boathouse, off-load, and park

6:15 p.m. - Launch and paddle around Duwamish Head and westward until we find exposed sandy beach (... there will be about a 10-foot high tide), where we can surf and do our skills practice in four feet of water or so, for starters.

~ 8:15 p.m. - Paddle back to Seacrest Boathouse, take-out, pack up, and catch optional dinner and beverage at Marination Ma Kai restaurant.

    Conditions and Contingency:

This paddle is contingent upon reasonably safe wind and weather conditions.

    Equipment Requirements:

Kayak, paddle, pfd, paddlefloat, pump, sprayskirt, sunglasses, sunscreen, water and snacks, immersion gear.  Extra change of warm clothes in a dry-bag.

    Immersion Gear:

Wearing immersion protection, a drysuit or wetsuit, (preferably a drysuit with some insulating clothing under, upper body and lower), is required for this paddle and practice.

Should be in, sounds fun. Have folks coming
into town later on Friday evening so I'll miss
    post-paddle dinner.

Hey, Pat. My GF, who was gonna come, just started a medical treatment and is not feeling well enough for this outing, so it's us two, which'll be fine for this. I can make it earlier and would like to, any time from 4:30 p.m. on. Give me a call at[masked] to coordinate.

Hey Aaron, so sorry to have to cancel. My car is overheating, so I'm stuck without transport for a while.
