"Raft Up!" Kayak and Music Festival on Vashon Island

Description:  Let's party and paddle at the "Raft Up!" kayaking and music festival, August 16 and 17, on Vashon Island, and be part of a world-record-setting most kayaks in one raft!

More details (from the event website):

Sutton’s Bay, Michigan holds the current world’s record for the most kayaks and canoes rafted up. In 2013, they organized a raft up of 2,099 boats on Sutton’s Bay.

But, in the past two years the record has been broken by other groups! That’s why we’re aiming to gather 2,500 boats, raise $70,000 for VYFS (Vashon Youth and Family Services), and show the world that the Northwest is the canoe and kayak capital of the US!

Raft Up begins on August 16th, with camping and a music festival at the Open Space. Centrally located on the Island, the O-Space (as it is known) will be open at 2 p.m. for early campers and 4 p.m. for the festival. Approximately 200 camp sites will be available at the O-Space and even more at Vashon School District for Raft Up participants and their guests. Camping on Vashon is not something that happens often. We encourage Raft Up participants to come on Saturday and camp, to enjoy the music and food, and to avoid long ferry lines on the morning of Sunday, August 17th.

The fun starts early the next day, Sunday, August 17th, with waterfront activities at Jensen Point, along the shores of Quartermaster Harbor.  The record-breaking Raft Up attempt will take place at 1:30 p.m. on the 17th.

Meetup Schedule and Itinerary:

None.  Just show up and have a good time.  Saturday there's a music festival and Sunday there's a waterfront festival and world-record kayak raft.  For anyone who wants to do some paddling, well ... the whole thing is on very nice Quartermaster Harbor. ~~~ /v ~ /v ~ /v ~~~

Camping space is available for Saturday night.  If you're camping out, festival pre-registration is suggested, as the prime festival camping area may fill up.

For finding the other meetup folks at the festival, check in with Aaron at cell phone[masked] when you get there.

Equipment Requirements:

Kayak, paddle, pfd, paddlefloat, pump, sprayskirt, sunglasses, sunscreen, water and snacks.  The rest is up to you.  If  you need a rental kayak, check Vashon Watersports,

Big paddling weekend for me. Friday: Wildcat Cove, Chuckanut Bay and Fairhaven with my two 19 y.o.'s. Lots of seals hauled out on Chuckanut Rock. Saturday: SSAK picnic at Twanoh State Park on Hood Canal (... nice bunch of folks!) and paddled over to and up the Tahuya River. Saw a bird in the shoregrass in the estuary the likes of which I've never seen before, a fairly large bird, with two bright orange spots on its upper breast ... I figure it was either an Upland Sandpiper or a Sooty Grouse. Sunday: Raft-up! ... with lots of paddling, lots of folks, and lots of fun, on Vashon Island (... a fun get-away ... rustic Vashon is different ... Woodstock Nation? 1970? :)-

Aaron Jim here...I am so sorry to cancel last minute but for some reason I never got the notice that I had been moved off the waiting list. I need to find out why...I just happened to wake up early and see a text message reminder about the trip. A thousand apologies...had I known I was in I'd have been ready to go. Hope the paddle is fun!

Jim, I'm on Vashon (... after paddling all day on Hood Canal ,,, wonderful!). If you want to head over here and paddle in the morning (and then do the Raft-Up!), give me a call at[masked] and catch a ferry over. Otherwise, catch ya next outing; I'll be posting a good one (... very good) soon for Labor Day weekend.
